Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Yes the old 5th pod trick. Pretty much a thing of the past now.

I can remember some press reports announcing the arrival of the "New 5-engine Jumbo Jet" !
Wonder if the engine got docked hours, windmilling as it did on the ferry flight?

actually there is much more chance of 1 of 10 engines failing than 1 of 2 engines failing - and on a 2 engine jet it is very unlikely both engines will fail (other than by multiple Canada geese!) so all said an done an 'ETOPS' spec twin engine jet is the way to go!

I recall the Dornier Do X flying boat off 1929 , had twelve engines and three decks , Cowpatz this fix still has two engines missing and one deck short laugh.gif

I was just reading that the Dornier X was way under powered even with 12 engines..

So Cowpatz what do they do now if they need a spare engine away from base...do they just go down to the local P&W, GE or Rolls Royce shop and pick up another one or borrow one from another airline?

Hey Nak,s 12 X 580 (approx) horse power engines - thats an entire squadron of Harvard,s took em almost a year to get to America and the funny thing getting there found they had nearly a dozen stowaways , Im sure Cowpatz A380X would be luckier than that rolleyes.gif

Funny really as a past Chairman of RR was asked why he always flew on 4 engined aeroplanes.
His answer:
"Because they haven't built a 5 engine one yet!"

For a while RR was only leasing engines. The Air NZ B777-200 RR engines are leased. If one goes pop then it is up to RR to sort out.

Having flown the worlds best 4 engine aircraft for the last 13 plus years I can tell you that 4 engines is way better than 2.

In a 4 engine aircraft if one engine fails it is a nuisance. In a 2 engine aircraft it is an emergency.
