DC-3 World Rally 2010

I signed up for the DC-3 World rally this year and have completed the first two flights out of ten.

It's been a fantastic way to hone my skills with this old bird. All the flights are set up with NDB and VOR waypoints so the navigation pratice is priceless.

Flight 1, departure Zelienople Pennsylvania, destination Washington DC.


Flight 2 Dublin Int to Barra Outer Hebrides.

Fisrt land since Dublin, The Mull of Kintyre, rain all the way.

Thats a cool concept!! Do you have a deadline to meet or can you just fly as and when you see fit?? Do you use realworld weather at all??

It's run through DC-3 Airways, apparently they do it every year. This year commemorates the 75th birthday of the DC-3.

The rally runs from 2nd October to the 31st, giving 3 days to complete each flight. You can do each flight as many times as you want but only one flight report is submitted.

It is not a competition and flight averages are posted for so you can see how you measure up.

I completed my 2nd flight by the time the averages were put out for the first one. Although my flight time was good the fuel consumption was way more than any one, i'm pretty sure i'm not leaning the mixture correctly.

Hopefully have it right for the third flight.

The weather and times are set for each flight to keep a level playing field.

I wonder if it is a concept that we could pick up and organise within NZFF??

It would be fun and educational in many respects. I have never come to terms with mastering the nav side of the sim - something like this might provide the incentive to do so

Flight 3

Raufarhofn, Iceland to Vestmannaevjar, Iceland.

A particually hard flight as the under about 3000 feet the visibility was very limited in the snow. Amazingly I managed to find my destination, although it took 2 attempts at a landing.
