Don't give up on it yet Markus, if this carries on there could be a lot of very cheap real estate to be had.

Good to know, mate!

Damn the aftershocks.....

Last night was really bad, a heap in the 5.0 region. Whole family starting to suffer sleep depravation now and we're just so damn nervous, jump at every sound. Work (Trimble) is out for a second day after the strong shakes last night.

We live in Halswell and while not as bad as some areas we did get it pretty bad. Couple of streets closed and masses of liquefaction all over the place. We never lost power at all and only lost water until 5pm on the Saturday. We thought we got off lightly with a couple of bowl breakages etc but in the light of day on Saturday was quite shocked to find a crack right through our house. Dining room and kitchen are tending to migrate in a generally easterly direction. Only 1/2 inch at this stage but appears to be getting progressively worse. Kids school is one of the ones with major damage.

Family is planning to head away to Central Otago for a week or so until things calm down.

Glad the rest of the team on here is OK and that there seems to be sufficient whisky on hand to survive for the forseable future.

Was talking to Ian on the phone last night when the 5.1 and 5.4 hit. You could hear it clearly over the phone lines. Kinda glad I live in AUckland. Least we're only gonna get blown up by one of our 50+ cones right Fauville? clapping.gif

Yep getting so over it, between turning out to fire calls and the after shocks then going to work she is starting to get a bit tedious, I think I have only managed a max of 15 hours sleep since the quake Saturday morning, one thing about it is we are becoming experts in removing chimneys.

It certainly does wear you down. I don't think that you can get used to the aftershocks -- they actually stress me out a lot more than the did for the first 2 days. I live on poles, which act pretty much as huge shock-absorbers, but it does mean that there is a lot of movement. Because the house is on a cliff, there's only one way out to the street, but there was no way I could have got there during the actual quake.

Watching the reports on TV was very strange -- I guess it comes from the fact that these days we get instant access to disaster news from all over the world, and here was my own city. I kept on 'switching off' from actually recognising this as Christchurch.

I was very pleased that the power was restored quickly, but we've been without running water for most of the time. My flatmate was away during the quake, so she didn't have to deal with it at all -- she came home yesterday, just as the water was restored, and today she's been washing the dog and doing loads of washing, and I had to say hey, I haven't had a proper shower in 4 days!

Amazing that we didn't suffer any damage, except one of my flatmate's thousands of dolls needed a bit of glue. Things were strewn all over the floor, pictures came down, but nothing broke. My Xbox, which had sparks shooting out of it during the actual quake, is working fine as if nothing happened.

But it was heart-breaking to see what some people had to deal with, I drove over to pick up my daughter on Sunday, and around the river looked like a war-zone. Kaiapoi and Pines Beach -- where I used to live -- looked pretty much uninhabitable on the TV last night.

Just a heads up, there was a rather big earthquake in Hawkes Bay today (Napier Hastings) of 5.1.

Yep - not so much in Napier, but Waipawa (where my mother lives) got a reasonable shaking. There were 2 here - one @ 10:03 and one @ 10:48. The 1st was not noticeable, the second just a few seconds of gentle roll...
