Hey, looking great. Something I've thought of for a while now - is it possible when people are using photo-real to at least clone out the parked aircraft & vehicles on the grass? I would be happy to do it for you if you send me the file: I've got Photoshop 7 and am pretty good at cloning out unwanted things: even down to power lines and such... Let me know. Same goes for anyone else developing scenery with photoreal - I'm happy to oblige with the good old clone tool! biggrin.gif

Yes - I've spotted a fair few "ghost images" underneath static planes etc. Does spoil the effect somewhat winkyy.gif

I normal take out aircraft and the odd random car ,ive a got a full car park of them at Hamilton that will stay ,i see no reason filling my carparks up with static models ,in most cases its most important to let the photoreal do all the work ..

Ok. Myself, I prefer real 3D over flat "fakes" - makes a bit of work for the PC, but real cars tend not to be flat... winkyy.gif

A really good point, this really does come down to the individual developer, which is kind of supported by the comments here. There is a range of choices, from leaving everything in to cleaning everything up. I normally do a bit of work on high resolution images, especially things which can't be 'hidden' by a 3D object -- static aircraft for instance.

Another aspect of this is shadows -- I like to remove major ground shadows, but others have a completely different objective -- Orbx not only leaves shadows in, but draws shadows where they don't exist, so that their scenery cannot really be used with shadows turned on. This gives lovely screen shots -- there's some stunning shots of sun-dappled roads, for instance -- but it does have some drawbacks -- first, they remain the same whatever the weather and time of day, and secondly they will never be able to reproduce the sharp sunburnt look of a New Zealand airport, almost completely unprotected by an ozone layer:)

I prefer to rely on FSX's ability to create shadows, even with the appropriate performance hit.

As Rob pointed out , its the developer choice , a good example is ORBX Melbourne using a very detailed photo covering the car park , the area is hidden by the airport building s , the key thing is how close are you are and in any position in your aircraft requires showing off such detail , smaller fields course have it where is required .

Yes don't worry, will be cleaning up the ground image, but I will do this last when I have placed everything. Plus I'm waiting on a new image so no point in doing it with this one.

Heh heh - nice to know there are a few of us around! I don't live in the Masterton area, but if there is anything I can do to help, let me know. My wife was born there, so I have a small affinity with the area. I haven't got any specific skills at making scenery, but if there is any "grunt" work like using Photoshop for image editing and the like, I'm happy to pitch in. As time progresses and I begin to get a handle on how all this scenery creation works, I'll begin to try my own hand and may be of more help to the rest of you doing the heavy lifting at that point... I guess having a "willing to help" attitude is a start tho, eh? biggrin.gif

Um...well I know the SVAS building, easy enough to pick: smile.gif

But I'm not sure about the Vintage Aviator Hanger?

Actually they're all in the big one with the OS&R company logo on top...

WOW!!!!!!!! These buildings puts my feeble efforts to shame. Good on ya, Nick. This is the quality I would now LEAST expect for any new Flight Sim from Microsoft. Almost makes me wanna change back to FSX....well, almost.

FAB!!!!

Um slowly I don't really have any time ATM, got NCEA Level 3 exams in 2 weeks. So sometime after that at least.

Got some buildings to finish and a runway to sort out. Then water and blending work on the photoreal image.

Do people still like 2.5m photoreal backdrops, or prefer VLC to handle that now?

As Ian said, photoreal blended at the edges is best. That way people without VLC still get the benefit of at least a good looking area around the Airport smile.gif

That's looking brilliant, Nick. It always give me a real buzz to see a new local airfield out of the blue. A nice fit with VLC.

Out of the blue? The original post was from 2010! Great to see you're still working on this Nick, with this and Rob's Nelson that be a couple of more decent destinations from my local NZWN biggrin.gif

And I concur on the photoreal blended into VLC, definetely the way to go

Cheers, Wayne
