DX10 Night textures weirdness

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Adamski » Sat May 29, 2010 5:08 pm

Having had fun messing around with the stock FSX NZAA scenery, I've discovered (when testing it out) that I get missing textures at night ... *but only with DX10 enabled*.

I suspect that FSX is now looking for .dds textures (as opposed to .bmp ones) and that they weren't all created <???>. I turned on scenery debug in fsx.cfg to find that it was looking for "mc_LM.dds" which certainly doesn't exist anywhere on my HD. Neither could I find anything like mc_LM.bmp.

If anyone wants to test this, please go to my NZAA lights thread here ... grab the file and see what happens to the main Auckland terminal building at around midnight. I think they should rename itl to "The Cinderella Terminal" laugh.gif.

I've also had a quick peek at Godzone NZWN and it also show missing textures at twilight etc.

Any ideas (bearing in mind I'm no scenery guru)?

Here are some screenies (all four time periods, DX10):

NZAA - problems at night:

NZWN - problems with dawn, evening and night:

DX 10 will lose the textures on world AI and Orbx AI aircraft but there is a program AddonConverterX that will convert AI and most earlier ( FS 2002 and FS 2004 aircraft) and shows the textures in DX 10.
The AddonConverterX cost EUR15.00 or US$19.95 about NZ$29.00 and can be found at http://www.flightsimtools.com/adconvx/

I have AddonConverter and, yes, it certainly helps to make some of the older aircraft textures visible. I also use UT2 for my AI. Generally, I don't have the missing textures that I used to. However - none of this seems to help with these missing night textures. For NZAA, for instance, it seems that the textures weren't even created in the first place.

Hi Adam I haven't had a look at NZAA for a while now maybe I should do a freight run up that way in my Argosy some evening to see how it looks.
As for AI traffic I also use Traffic X which is DX10 compatible and mixed in with some WOA and Orbx I have plenty of AI aircraft flying around.

I'll make sure the ground staff sweep the apron for ya! Aahhh ... beautiful plane, the Argosy. I actually had a ride in the back of one ... *many* moons ago!
