FSX stock NZAA Runway lights

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Adamski » Sat May 22, 2010 12:14 am

This may have been answered somewhere in the past, but [in Real Life] does the old 05L/23R parallel runway have lights?

Centre lights, VASI lights? Is the ILS still active?

It's just that every time I make an FSX approach in bad visibility, I think "eeek!" ... must be so easy to line up and land on the wrong one laugh.gif.

http://www.airport-data.com/world-airports/NZAA-AKL/

Has this to say:

Runway 05L / Runway 23R
Lighting System 1: Low Intensity Runway Lighting System
Lighting System 2: Runway End Identifier Lights
Lighting System 3: PAPI - Precision Approach Path Indicator

========================================

Runway 05R
Lighting System 1: Centerline Lighting System
Lighting System 2: High Intensity Runway Lights
Lighting System 3: Runway End Identifier Lights
Lighting System 4: Centerline and Bar
Lighting System 5: PAPI - Precision Approach Path Indicator

Runway 23L
Lighting System 1: Touchdown Zone Lighting
Lighting System 2: Centerline Lighting System
Lighting System 3: High Intensity Runway Lights
Lighting System 4: Runway End Identifier Lights
Lighting System 5: Centerline and Bar
Lighting System 6: PAPI - Precision Approach Path Indicator

Everything is still there but is switched off. Towerguy might be able to confirm if the switch still works upstairs?

Thanks for that thumbup1.gif ... looking at Google Earth, a lot of the old markings still appear to be there, so I left them in - just removed the lights. I also removed the bridge object on the 05L approach.

05L/05R (before/after):

23L/23R (before/after):

Is 05L/23R being used as a taxiway? If so - have the runway sidelights been changed from runway lights to taxi lights (yellow or blue, respectively, in FSX)?

I've put a test zip file here if anyone wants to have a play.

The stock FSX file is APX94450.bgl - does this need to be renamed - or would just placing the revised AFX version at a higher priority work OK (without any conflicts)?

05L and 23R are no more
it has been officially redesignated back to its old taxiway Alpha
the edge lights etc are still there but not operational , at night the only lighting is the green taxiway centerline lighting
there are no approach lighting systems operational
the ILS only ever worked when the parallel was in use because they had to physically move the equipment over!

most of the paint marking is now gone apart from some of the white side stripes also the taxiways have been renumbered now ie the old B10 is now B9 and leads directly across to A9, the old B8 and B9 are now J and K.

cheers

Is there one there though? I wonder how old the Google view is ... no X there at the moment ... so I've left it out for now. Also - can't do the old (fading) runway side markers without putting a runway back in. I had to recreate it as one long taxiway so I could get the lights right.

The latest version winkyy.gif ... is here.

I'm guessing with the taxiway lights on the old runway - as (dim) green centre-line and blue edge lights. What happens in RL at NZAA with taxiways - do they have centre lines?

I also tidied up a few aprons etc. AFX doesn't place objects - only airport data, so I'm limited with what I can do ... and - no - I'm not going to start messing with the "real" tools to do any of this - there are far more qualified people on NZFF to do that! This is just a bit of fun winkyy.gif. I have no excuse for landing on the wrong runway now (sorry Ian laugh.gif).

Just FYI, the Scruffyduck's (freeware) ADE allows Object placement. It's a very powerful Airport editing tool (it's incredibly intuitive, and as easy to use, as AFCAD).

I looked at that and I'm embarassed at how long it was before I realised that no you hadn't put an aerial photo in to show there shouldn't be a yellow X down there ...

taxiways are green centerline lights, we don't have blue edges except for a couple around c5 and over at the international - essentially - no blues.

Great - thanks for that info. I may as well re-do them (anything to get me away from posting more Islander screenies laugh.gif).

I haven't removed the old runway signboards (or whatever you call them) either ... so I may just do that as well, while I'm at it. You say it's gone back to it's original Alpha - would the sign for that be "A0" - or just "A"? Is there a *current* taxiways map for NZAA online anywhere? Would be nice to get it at least half right after so much messing about!

I wasn't really thinking I'd be messing with taxiways - I just wanted to turn off the runway lighting ... hahahahaha! ... but I'm getting quite into it now.

ZK-LGD - thanks - I'd clean forgotten about ADE. Must give it a try. As you can see, I'm no scenery designer - so it's all new territory for me (don't worry, TopRob, your job's safe laugh.gif).

You won't find any more current information for Auckland and the whole of New Zealand's airspace than here

Look for 'Auckland - Ground Movements — RWY 05R/23L Operations'; That one should tell you what you want.

The 05L/23R lights have annoyed me for ages, as well as the other changes that haven't been updated on my sim yet, so looking forward to what you get up to!

Thanks for that - duly nabbed!

I think I've got about as far as I can (without actually *adding* stuff with ADE). I've re-done all the taxiway lights, updated all the taxiway signs I could find and tidied up a few bizarre apron polygons. This is by no means a real re-working of NZAA - just some extended tweaks for the stock FSX airport which, you have to admit, is pretty cruddy.

The link for the file is the same as before - here - but the archive is the new one. New "before and after" pics are in the archive.

Is it worth putting this up on Flightsim.com? Now, that would be a first for me! winkyy.gif

I think so mate, I'm really pleased with it, much better landing at NZAA at night, can see the runway alot more easy. Plus it's more realistic!

Cheers
