Handheld GPS Unit

A forum for everything else that does not fit into the other categories

Hiya all

I am looking for a cheap (ie $50 ish) handheld GPS unit for Geocaching, which I have just discovered and want to get into. I travel a fair bit for work and spending some time expolring new areas and finding "treasure" appeals to me. It also seems like a good way for my wife and I to spend time in the great outdoors on weekends (we recently both gave up smoking and need to be doing stuff!!) ( www.geocaching.com )

Let me know if you have one for sale or know of any that may suit. Been looking at Garmin GPS12's, Etrex, Magellan Explorists on TradeMe so far.

Cheers

Well done for quiting mate!
When you say GPS, you mean just one of those handheld ones that gives you like height AMSL and long and lat coordinates?

Thanks mate (for the congrats!), it's getting easier now, week 3 smile.gif

Yeah, all I need is lat and long with ability to enter waypoints and a line or an arrow that points to the "spot"

Cheers

You also need the ability to turn off "lock on road", so if you happened to be looking at any of the cheap older nuvis and thinking to yourself "hey, that has a battery ..." stop looking :-)

Register on the gps society forum http://forums.gps.org.nz/ and when you see something you think will do the trick ask there, what those guys collectively don't know about how suitable any gps unit is for caching isn't worth knowing. There are etrex-H units on trademe for around $200, I know it's over your budget but the H series have the high sensitivity receiver (hence the H) and you wouldn't believe the difference that will make to your results.

And welcome to the caching club !
