Converting FS9 Scenery to FSX

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby s0cks » Thu May 13, 2010 3:50 pm

I have just had a stab at this on a couple of Lawrie's airports. One worked fine, and just needed a flatten + exclude (NZHT). The second is a bit more problematic (NCRG). The taxiway/parks had to be tweaked, no problem. But the other issues are:

- Some static vehicles are facing the wrong way compared to FS9 and therefore clipping through walls.
- Huge FPS hit. On FS9 there is no FPS hit whatsoever, but it seems to half my framerate in FSX.

I guess the first issue can be resolved with some scenery editing software. Can someone suggest a good one (freeware or payware)? And the second issue, any ideas? Or is it a case of pulling out bits of the scenery to find the offending object? What has changed in FSX that might cause this?

Did you have to install all the EZlibrary files to get them to work?

Yes, but I have almost all his sceneries on FS9, so I copied the Static Objects Library folder over to FSX and that did the trick. So all the buildings and textures exist which was pretty sweet.

So ... if I wanted to test things out, I'd have to install all that stuff before adding your revised sceneries <?>. I seem to remember it being fairly massive!

Also - I'm wondering whether these [EZ] libraries are specific to FS9 and aren't too optimised for FSX. Could this explain the framerate hit?

I think this is perhaps a mission too far. I'm having major problems with a lot of the airports now. Mainly issues with terrain. Most airports are not flat and appear to be in a slightly different location to FS9... either that or the mesh is more detailed in FSX. Creating a flatten in ADE only flattens the land under the runways and taxiways so I get massive cliff faces all around and in the airport! Also got tree and bush textures that have strange transparency issues.

Reading up it seems that converting is far more difficult than just starting from scratch sad.gif

I'd be happy to team up with someone, or some people to try and sort these great sceneries of Lawrie's, but on my own I'm just not knowledgeable enough - and really don't have the time.
