ATC repeating

Part way between Whangarei and Great Barrier Island the ATC kicked in started repeating the same line of info (both audio and in text) over and over for the rest of the flight.
I saw this in the manual 'If you don't initiate contact with ATC at the beginning of your flight, you can fly without any interaction with controllers."
However I do not recall contacting any ATC. At least i assume it was ATC, giving various rules for various approach types in a certain airport (forget which one, none I was visiting that day)
Short of shutting off the radio completely, how do I shut this guy up? lol

Ah, you've hit the unusual occurrence that is the default radio frequency. It is the same as Auckland's ATIS frequency. The ATIS is what a pilot listens to before taking off or landing at an aerodrome to determine the runway, windspeed, altimeter setting etc. To 'shut him up', just turn the radio dials to change the frequency.
