Great news, after starting this thread a while ago, and gaining my PPL in march, i had my flight test for CPL on friday and passed smile.gif bring on MEIR

Hi Guys, hows it goin?

I am contemplating on enrolling into AIR HAWKES BAY LTD or NAC or HELIPRO up in Welly.

Anyone have any info & experience in this particular flying school?

What's the weather like in up in Hastings? How are the instructors & planes?

Which is the better of the 3? Thx guys.

Did most of my training at NAC and doing my C-Cat now. Cant comment on the fixed wing side of things but the training in the choppers is pretty bloody good. Good part of the country go fly around, mostly good weather, Nelson only 15mins away, Wellington an hour away. Theory courses are brilliant, makes it so easy to pass the exams. The helicopter fleet is really good, got four R22s and access to an R44, H300 and H500. The fixed wing fleet seems to be made up of quite old 152s and 172s. Single engine IFR is in a 172 RG. Twin training is either in a Couger or a Seneca. No really modern aeroplanes but your first job is probably going to be in a dodgy old 206 or 172 anyway. Cant go wrong with the old steam gauges.

I'm just doing my FRTO KDR's at the moment and am stumped by the last reference which I need to look up:

"State the limitations on pilots with regard to: (a) unauthorised transmissions"

Any ideas where to look/ what it is refering to?

Ask an instructor bro, I had a few of mine that made no sense at all. Theres nowhere that I know of to look it up.

Could be something to do with

a) Not allowed to use the radio for stuff other than required transmissions (i.e. chatting with mates)
b) Must be qualified or under guidance of instructor

I thought it may have been something like that but I dont know for sure. Makes me laugh, that happens all the time when you fly down the coast.

Just need some quick info about Air Hawkes Bay College in Hastings...

Anyone from this college wanna give some general comments on the quality of instructors, fees, planes, delays, time frame etc...

Unfortunately, I am not so lucky... After getting laid off in Oct and getting a nice generous settlement package, I had been hoping to do my CPL flight test before xmas... and had been working hard on the prep... only I couldn't get a test slot sad.gif

Sisters Wedding the week before xmas, xmas, new years... and before I knew it, a month had gone without any flying... so of course I got a test date of January 25th...

Lack of aircraft due maintenance and Walsh Memorial, annoying weather == lack of decent prep...

However, on the day nice weather and everything was going well until I messed up the entry to my Max Rate Turns... I had had trouble with these during training... and during the repeat maneuver I think I panicked a little knowing my entire test was on the line... and in a word... FAIL sad.gif

Oh well... $900 lesson learned... bridge built... re-booked for 24th Feb... here's hoping the weather in the next few weeks is a bit nicer than it is today in Auckland!! what a crappy long weekend... and I need to maintain currency tongue.gif

Getting laid off .. HC , i,v heard that far to often in the last year , big company and a bunch off idiots running it , they release people only to put them back on six months later , this time last year , well it was just nuts! , Costa Rica management ... no wonder there country is third world .....

Oct , your CPL ... i believe you should have run though the Xmas period , relax and enjoy the down time , still would have been on your mind with the layoff , hence the muck up ... if ya do some cross country and end up in CHCH , you can throw me in the back as a bag of spuds to cover ya fuel bill . smile.gif

Yeah... my mates who are still there lament the fact that I am still technically being paid after getting released early... while they are still butting their heads against brick walls on a daily basis..

As for relaxing... well I went up today to do a BFR so my PPL will be current for the next flight test... (my PPL was 2 years ago on wednesday)... was fun... and due to my currency was actually fairly easy. And though they aren't part of the PPL Syllabus, I also did a couple of pretty decent Max Rate Turns... CFI Rob looked at me with a cheeky grin and said "so why didn't you do THAT on your flight test?"

I'm hoping to get down to the South Island at some point... would like to rustle up some travelling companions from the club for a bit of a club SI tour... we'll see how it goes...

Just had a quick question.

I've only done a very minuscule amount of flying time in a Cessna 150 (enough to solo) but that was on a 2 week course with air cadets. I'm thinking about getting my PPL at least and was wondering would it be hard to start training in a tomahawk? The reason I ask is because I'm in Wellington and the aero club here has a tomo but no 150/152s - the closet club with a 152 is out at Paraparaumu which is quite a mission to get to, since i don't have my own car.

I don't have much time to get a PPL either as I'm due to get into the air force [not as a pilot] in June, do you think it's worth it to try for my PPL in that short space of time?

It depends how badly you want it and how much money you have, if your joining the airforce but not as a pilot you won't be doing any flying. So if you did it now you would get to fly all over the place before you join the RNZAF.

However it isn't a quick 'study up' before the PPL flight test, you need to know all your ground work spot on.
You will need lots of revision prior to your flight test (probably a couple of flights per week) and I would suggest doing your X/C before your PPL.
Depends what stage you are at but it will be quite full on if your at school and depending on your budget.

However I wish you all the best and if you can fund yourself, then I say go for it!

Out of school and with nothing to do all day so I'm good on that aspect smile.gif . Yea I've done a lot of ground stuff already, just not a sufficient amount of time on X/c or IFR so I don't think I will find it hard to pick up. Only thing holding me back is restrictions on class 2 medical (I'm colour blind) but I'm doing an eye test tomorrow to see if it is mild enough for it to not matter.

Iv flown both PA38s and C152s. I reckon the PA38 is easier to fly, you shouldnt have a problem going between types.

Thanks guys. Did my eye test today and unfortunately for my wallet...

I PASSED!!!!! With [excuse the pun] flying colours. My colour blindness is mild enough for me to get an unrestricted license.
