The McAfee Security Centre firewall program that came with my laptop is due to expire in the near future- what other freeware variant would users here recommend as a replacement?

I used to run Sygate Personal Firewall (SPF) ... but it's pretty old now. I have installed Comodo (also free, but new) on two systems so far and have been very pleased. It has an anti-virus component, but I disable that as I run AVG.

I used AVG for a year or two until their last major upgrade. A lot of the computer forums were reporting problems with it so I went over to AVAST. This has worked perfectly for me and I have installed it on four other systems for family and friends - there have been no problems. Everyone has their favourites though so you'll probably get a variety of replies.

ZoneAlarm is still the best in my opinion. Some users find it a bit too complex, but at least it doesn't eat all your resources (CPU/RAm) for a scan like Symantech does.

Let my system hungry load of cr@p Norton antivirus expire and replaced with Avira AntiVir Personal which is free. It's basic and works a treat. Don't even notice it.

If you are looking for a Firewall and anti-virus programs try the best free firewall is Comodo firewall and for free anti-virus Avast Home edition or Antivir personal another very good program for keepping your computer clean is C-cleaner all these can be found on
http://www.filehippo.com/
I have used all three of them and find they are the best I used to use AVG but found that the odd nasty did slip through it now and again that the other two picked up.
Comodo firewall free is very savage and a pain until you get it trained and configured to your computer.
Another very good one is Online Armor Free

Those would be probably the best two free firewalls and far better than a lot of the paid for ones.
