looking for LOW spec pc... and a high spec

hey dudes and dudettes,

just wondering if anyone has an old wreck of a pc that theyd be willing to sell/give to me (depending on spec and condition)

im looking for a few really low spec machines, something near these specs:

RAM: dont care, from 128mb-1024mb
CPU: pentium D and backwards
HDD: None, and if there is one, tiny.
The rest: dont mind, as long as its still functional

also looking for high spec pc someone has grown out of and is buying a higher spec, noted that Ian seems to go through his pretty quick, have you got any Ian??
Current PC - 3.2Ghz quadcore , GTX470, 750W PSU, 3.5tb, 12gb ddr3

Sadly i dont have any parts or computers left from my last build or you would have a PC ,
and what for is a easy answer ,Sams PC crapped itself and he will be eager to play combat arms and sim games no doubt ...
i have cables and so on if you get stuck in that department i mite even have a case around ,i do have pen1 pen2 pen3 machines and a old dual core 800hz x800hz or is that 4x4 makes a dual of 800hz not sure but nothing that would run new stuff ,i mean its like the oldest dual core ive ever seen, could of been the first in the country actually as my uncle imported it for graphics ages ago from the USA

Wherebouts are you (for possible pick-up)? Also - if you give us an idea of what you're going to do with them, we could probably work out whether our junk could fit the bill!

well the high spec stuff as Mike said im planning on using for CA, my big laptop is screwed and is heading in the mail to Hamilton today... i still have another little brother to that laptop so im all good to play and work, so getting a high spec isnt urgent. after my laptop is fixed i will be selling or claiming insurance and then buying a high spec pc...

the small low spec stuff is just for a little project im trying, it really doesnt need to be of anywhere near playing games standard, it will be running Linux also so it wont need to be up to XP standard smile.gif

oh and jeez, i thought I was the insomniac laugh.gif your all up in the middle of the night too

Im half way between Tauranga and Waihi... although im about to go up to Auckland to celebrate my birthday, my mum and dads wedding anniversary, my aunt and uncles house warming, and my mums birthday all in one laugh.gif

You could try contacting RCN and see if they have any dealers in your area... They re-cycle ex-lease computers. So you can get like a 'business desktop' (Typically something like a P4, gig of Ram, 60Gig HDD, onboard graphics etc) for a couple of hundred...

I have an old AMD XP2000+ in a case that is just taking up room under my desk... got a power supply in it... unfortunately I don't think it has any RAM in it... and it doesnt have a video card... it may have a DVD drive... I stopped using it as it was starting to reset itself and freeze all the time... I think the mobo was probably faulty... from memory it is a Gigabyte GA-7VAX

You're welcome to come and take it away when you're in the 09... otherwise I'll probably get around to either putting it on TradeMe for $1 no reserve or throwing it out in the next inorganic collection tongue.gif

In fact that offer stands for anyone that wants to try to resurrect it or salvage the case/PSU etc...

haha a site like rcn would be perfect but they will market their goods higher than normal to try make profit... also they seem to be aiming at resellers only, no end users... got a nasty email back from them saying im not aloud to buy from them laugh.gif

Ian, next time you have a fail pc, just lemme know and ill be happy to take it off your hands. tongue.gif

Am I not reading it right or does it whizz past the motherboard bit without saying what it actually is ?

I have around half a dozen old CRT's - of various sizews, resolutions, weight (!) ... all sitting her gathering dust. I was going to give them to a local school, but I think these days even they will turn their noses up at them!

What flavour of Linux are you hoping to run? I ask because they're all getting a wee bit "top heavy" now and many distros refuse to run well on the old clunkers we used to run them on. I have a couple of machines here running Ubuntu - and it needs almost as much resources as Windows. I tried the cut-down Xubuntu but it wasn't much better.

I'l have a rummage in the basement and see what I can unearth.

Anyone else here wanting old CRTs?

Why ask us, if your such a computer expert?

Yes, it will, but I would not recommend OC to 3.7ghz. Thats a hell of a lot, be very careful.

me, a computer expert?? LOL

all this stuff is being done by my friend, i just wanted a second opinion laugh.gif

im not worried about the CPU overheating or anything, its a notoriously low heat chip. but yes i am rethinking only going to 3ghz or 3.*

3 would be plenty, you wouldnt have to worry about the heat at all either.
