Apparently Telecoms releasing (earlier than i expected), 12th May

does anyone know if the Hamster is going to be pre-recorded or is he actually here on the 12th of may... somehow unlikely

EDIT: "Telecom will also reveal a new range of mobile handsets and services including one with an 8.1 megapixel camera, music player and Outlook email support."

, i dont really need my point and shoots anymore, just get a phone...

Lol, you can automatically tell that someone isn't from Auckland by the fact their cell number starts with 027.

Most people I know south of the Bombays have a Telecom though- think they have much better coverage around the countryside, although I was surprised to receive a text at 2000 feet the other day in the Ardmore training area on my 021!

Not quite.

Telecom have installed 850 MHz WCDMA throughout the country, which will have 2100 MHz WCDMA available in some major cities.
Vodafone, on the other hand, have a 2100 MHz WCDMA network with some 900 MHz WCDMA infill (in addition to their old GSM network). The 850 MHz technology is far superior to 2100 MHz in many ways. As the ads say, it's better and faster in more places.

Telecom, providing they don't screw it up, have this one in the bag. At least Telecom's aging, rubbish CDMA network will end up dead sooner or later. XT is much, much better. iPhone, for example, is better suited for XT than it ever was (or will be) for Vodafone.

On any note, I'm looking forward to the launch. The 'beta' phase has been going pretty well, but there's nothing like a hard launch.

More money to waste on the newest toys and network ..
they should give us all new phones if they want to change stuff to force us to move on from our old phones ,,there arent many places ive found that my mobile does pick up ...

apparently ive hooked myself into a 'testing' thing. its on their site, but its 'coming soon' there, i know some people who know some people etc etc

i for one dislike vodafones plans. especially if your a teenager, texting is telecom, phoning is vodafone...

the only reason ive seen people move away from Telecom so far in my sort view of NZ is for the same reason Barrack Obama got into presidency. the just want a change, same with poor old Auntie Helen.

Telecom would need to actually change (and offer) some more mobile network services to measure up to vodafone, sure there is the network, but it's how you implement and use it that counts.

Sure the vodafone prepay plans are pretty stupid if you don't only text vodafone, but the postpay (OnAccount) plans own the competition. Not just in terms of what is included in the plan, but the generic network services offered by vodafone.

i do think that Telecom will have this in the bag, unless they are going to be greedy and make it extremely expensive (quite likely actually). what do you mean by "the generic network services offered by vodafone." as far as i can tell they are nearly the same with the services as telecom

I don't think that this is going to be that popular, sorry but you can launch that for AKL, WLG, CHC and few other big cities(for NZ size), but covering more area is just waste of money(i was working in telecom company overseas, on that time it was near 18.5mln customers), and only after reaching 12mln they decided to go 3G, but only in major cities(with 300k+ population). Don't know what T. expecting, but im pretty sure that prices won't be low, to make this popular. Especially compare even to their(and not only their) prices for internet...

Vodafone has a casual rate of $1 for 10Mb of data charged only when you use it.
Telecom has a casual rate of $0.01 for every Kb of data charged when you use it. For $1 you get 100Kb. 10Mb would cost you over $100.

Local Zone. Use your mobile as a home phone when you are home, and a mobile when you are out. Web2Txt and Free2Txt.

It can cost over twice as much to send a Photo Message with Telecom than it does on vodafone, and with vodafone you can send pxts outside of New Zealand (whereas Telecom can only send photo messages domestically).

well its kinda like all this hooha about telecom vs telstra. everyone has gone over to telstra thinking its a change for the better or a change nonetheless, but having been a customer (not at my house, sisters house) telstra is actually fraught with problems and i actually prefer telecom. i guess its just a point of view because there are others that believe telstra can do no wrong.

Yep this is absolutely true. I meant from a network standpoint though. To have it in the bag completely they need to offer plans and service to match the network.

Telecom has said that XT will still count as Telecom for billing in this way i.e. 2000 texts to Telecom phones and/or XT phones with that plan.
Prepaid credit will also transfer over to an XT phone as this is associated with the number, not the device.

Telecom's new XT mobile network, in the belief it is the source of interference on the Vodafone network.

Vodafone said it had begun the legal action following a significant rise in the number of customer complaints about interference on its network.

Testing showed serious interference to Vodafone's network caused by Telecom's network, which was still under construction.

Telecom said it would vigorously resist the request for an injunction.

"This is a piece of aggressive behaviour that betrays Vodafone's insecurities about competition from Telecom's new XT mobile network, just 13 days away from the launch," said Telecom chief executive Paul Reynolds.

Telecom said the Ministry for Economic Development had been investigating interference issues between the WCDMA technology used by Telecom and GSM technology used by Vodafone.

It said a letter from the ministry on April 9 said Telecom's WCDMA transmitters meet emission limits specified on spectrum licences.

Actually it is interesting to see what frequencies is used by VF and TC to inturupt each other. IMHO it is hust word game between VF&TC, i don't think that NZ gvmt issued frequences that can inturupt each other, it is a lot of range for only 2 companies(in some countries it is 5 or more companies live "friendly" in same standart)

In my opinion this is just Vodafone being childish and panicing, as they'll have a REAL competition now. C'mon....Selling 1 minute for $1.30 on a prepaid plan? What is this? The middle age? Should be no more than 10-20 cents.

Why is data up to (and over) 10000% (I think my maths is right; large numbers are mind-boggling...) more expensive on Telecom? I've been thinking about it and can't quite understand why in my mind...

That's like aviation in some countries, there is no pax to pay 100usd per 1 hour OW flight, so companies increase price to 200usd. Same with telecomunication in NZ(sorry guys but actually there is no tcm in NZ, it is just middle age(just compare internet and mobile with other countries, even which is less developed than NZ)). Don't see any future with nowadays prices
PS in one country i was using 100mb/s unlimited homeline(usually it was 70-80mbits) and price was 60NZD per month and 3G(1X EV-DO) modem with 10gigs of data+all national calls(incl.video) not more than 0.2nzd for another 60nzd. Here im paying 109nzd just for 65gigs of data on adsl speed...fml

Well in a market of only 4 million it's hard to justify infrastructure spending. My beef wasn't primarily with the level of the prices themselves, but the wild (WILD!) variation.

4 million concentrated in 3-4 main cities. Moreover, probably near half of that in quite small region of Auckland. Not big area for coverage.
