Here are a few pics taken during the trip to Ohakea to photograph the Spitfire.

On the way up:

Some jets.

The heavies.

Some pilot trainers.

We found the Resolution on the way home.

The hunter and the hunted.

Awesome behind the scene shots there Gav- thanks for posting.

Are the Macci jets actually operational, as in airworthy and flying? Haven't seen any photos of them off the ground dated in the last five years or so... whats the story with them?

Yup, they do still fly them on occasion. Not sure who flies them, or why, but they do. They're about the only jets we get in our skies at Palmy right now!

By the way, LOVED the pics Gavin. I always love seeing my local airbase during a normal day at the office as opposed to operating in airshow mode.

Air Force keeps the Macchi jets active to keep them airworthy and have them able to show off to any prospective buyers.

As well as intercept the odd rogue bug smasher that finds its way into Ohakea's airspace...I'm not joking either.

The more senior pilots fly em to do some aero's and just have some fun in a jet (such fun includes inverted circuits..)
