Custom line textures

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby greaneyr » Fri Jan 02, 2009 12:14 pm

I've been working on some easy enhancements to NZ scenery in FS9 lately, and one thing I'm having a go at is custom textures for things like roads and rivers. At the moment, I'm modelling the central north island, and there are a few manmade canals that the FS default line textures just don't do justice to. I've replaced one with textures built from google earth and it looks pretty decent. Roads, however, haven't been quite so successful.

I took some decent straights to begin with, then overlaid a custom pavement and drew my own lines as the google earth ones looked very 'jpeg-y'. I've built them as a texture, and they work fine in FS, except that FS seems to take some liberties with the lines. It appears to convert the (already low resolution) image into an even lower resolution and puts big white squares where there should be road edges, then a few in the middle where the centreline is. But it's not consistent. It's obviously done by design, since no change of the display settings makes it look any better.

Has anyone else experienced this and/or found a solution, or is this just FS9 for you?

Don't know how to help with this particular situation- but I've had similar issues with aircraft repaints in DXTbmp before which I fixed by unchecking the mip-maps box. Maybe whatever you use has a similar format?

You're project sounds intriguing by the way. Care to post any preview screenies?

Sure, I'll post links for those who are on slower connections as these images are straight off the screen dump.

This image shows a map of the bulk of the work thus far - an improved edge of Lake Taupo plus the addition of such lakes as Rotoaira, Rotopounamu, Otamangakau, Moawhango, and even Mt Ruapehu's crater lake.

This is probably the only shot that does justice to the work at this point in time. It's a good profile of Otamangakau in the foreground, plus the hydro power scheme canal leading into Rotoaira on the right. Toward the left, you can see the much smaller (and higher) Rotopounamu, and although not apparent, over the tops of the hills to the left you can see Lake Taupo.

Where do you uncheck the mip maps box? When you save the texture bmp?
