Some local Waikato flyable GA repaints

Discuss aircraft addons and repaints for Flight Simulator here

Postby deeknow » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:25 pm

Hey folks. Have knocked out a couple of repaints of flyable models of some local GA in the Waikato. I think this may be something I focus on as a way to learn how to paint and try to improve skills w the GIMP so I guess I'll keep posting any new skins under this thread.

Anyway, to get the ball rolling I've knocked out a Diamond Katana (ZK-SFG operated by CTC) and an Alpha 2160 (ZK-WKF operated by Waikato Aero Club). I'd welcome any tips from experienced painters as to finishing details, things to improve on, also want to work out how to give the skins a little more gloss (using Alpha layers?) and do some weathering. Happy to share my repaint templates if anyone wants to use GIMP to develop other skins for any of these models.

ZK-WFG : Alpha-2160 : zk-wkf.zip (avsim)

Repaint of the Alpha built in Hamilton New Zealand for the Waikato Aero Club. Alpha Aviation have since gone into liquidation which is a shame but as far as I know this aircraft is still used by the club (I think it's identical twin flew over my mates house while I was visiting there yesterday). The aircraft itself is a variation of the original French designed Robin HR200 which is what this repaint is based on for the simulator. The HR200 has a few minor differences but its pretty close. The model required for this repaint is by Mike Stone and can be found at AVSim (filename: "shr200.zip"). There are some real-world pics of the aircraft here, I'm working on a new photo-realisticish panel for it using one of those photos.

ZK-SFG : Diamond DA20 Katana
zk-sfg.zip (avsim)

The Diamond DA20 is a two-seat tricycle gear general aviation aircraft designed for flight training. This repaint is based on the Diamond DA20-C1 Evolution Panel, Sound & Aircraft Package for FS2004 from Premier Aircraft Design including an Interactive VC with Gauges. This particular repaint is of one of the aircraft operated by CTC Aviation Training (NZ) Limited in Hamilton.

Have pretty much finished my Alpha2160 photo-realistic-ish panel based on a photo of the actual panel as configured in the aero club machines. Would love to hear if it plays ok in you're install. Guess there could be some gauge probs in FSX but its all done using standard MS gauges from the Cessnas, and the Beech Baron and Mooney. Clicking on the image below should take you to a version with mousovers showing what was moved or substituted.

PM me if you're interested in trying this and I'll send you the panel files.

Wow the panel looks great Deeknow - If I had the time I always thought the Alpha would be a good model to "model"...I wonder how your paints/models of the Katana and Alpha will work as AI?

There is already a set of AI Katana's for CTC distributed with GNZLAP, they're in an aircraft folder named "AI Katana A1" and the model used for that is the PAD one, but with a modified .air file for AI use. They're great and appear in NZHN, altho the AFCAD does need to be tweaked to place them further south where the CTC area is. Sounds like creator may be updating the airport scenery which will be awesome for us locals thumbup1.gif

As far as the Alpha goes tho I dont think there are any AI Alphas/Robins, but being a Mike Stone model it may be ok for AI, I dont know anything about tweaking .air files tho to make them as lightweight as possible. Would be happy to crank out some more skins for the other Alphas in circulation tho.
