There been many posts here about the desert "wasteland" in FSX for NZ but others have posted that this can easily be banished - is this only for areas that we have FSX photo real scenery for (namely Coromandel, Marlborough etc) or is there an add on available that gets rid of it one swift hit??? ... or do we have to wait for ORBX for NZ or GEX or something like that??

Although it isn't a complete solution (it doesn't change any textures, and some seasons are better than others) Christian's FS2004 Landclass scenery improves things a lot.

Can anybody post some screenshots of non photo real areas in FSX with Christians Land class installed?? Would love to see how it improves it.

FScene4x is suppose to make NZ look greener, and although in my opinion, while it gets rid of the desert textures, the colours just didn't look right. The default snow textures look awful as well, and could certainly do with an improvement.

A thread search should bring up some more results but ill summarise here:

There are two issues here: Landclass and Textures.
The default FSX landclass isnt very good (i.e. the desert). Christians FS9 landclass is a good interim replacement but it still isnt perfect due to the textures and, I think, a couple of changes in texture naming between FSX and FS9.

A lot of the textures are based on, what I assume are, American 'colours' That is, green in summer, brown in winter. In NZ those colours are usually opposite (i.e. green in winter, browner in summer). So flying in summer with the FS9 Landclass will look like winter/spring/early summer in NZ and give good results. Flying in winter will still look too brown and atypical of NZ IMO.

There is a replacement landclass system in the works for FSX

These shots are before/after Christian's landclass scenery showing the blend between photo scenery and landclass. (Wellington: Auckland: Auckland)

Okay thanks guys - the screenshots are helpful - well it certainly looks better with Christians landclass but I might hold off until something comes out like ORBX or GEX. I guess FS9 looked pretty terrible without Christians landclass etc - not that I really saw it as I installed it as soon as I had FS9.

I found this thread in the Flight 1 GEX support forum which gives some clues that they might release something for NZ or this thread at ORBX which seems to suggest that something will also be released for NZ from them.

FSScene4x doesn't sound like the right product for NZ, Gokanru

Timmo whos making the landclass for FSX?

Um....why would you hold off? Have you got FSX? It only takes a couple of seconds to install and it's free. Sorry if that sounded a bit rude unsure.gif

No I dont have FSX - No not rude - good question - if I am going to make the move I will have to ditch FS9 all together with all the $$$ of add ons I have - not to mention the time in making FS 9 perfect - I dont have a big enough hard drive (I have already blown my hardware budget with CH yoke and pedals and new desk on the way to so i can fit the yoke on so a new hard drive is not an option in the short to medium term).
Ideally I would have both sims on the same PC but thats not going to happen.

When I make the move I just want FSX to look great from the start - the other thing is that I am not sure whether my PC can handle FSX that well - although I suspect it will do ok. If it dosen't handle FSX that well or I am unhappy how it looks, I won't be that happy as it will take me weeks to reinstall everything - plus the usual dramas that go with a reinstall - I have already done one too many reinstalls.

I already have a shopping list of what I want to install in a possible FSX install and ORBX or something like that is in it - but my FSX will hopefully have a lot less add ons then FS9 as my FS9 is rather bloated.

I was also late to the FS9 party so historically I am running about half to 3/4 a sim behind.
