FS9 and FSX

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Pato » Fri Aug 08, 2008 12:17 pm

I have two hard-drives and NZ Topo installed in FSX which is on my "E" partition on one HDD. I also want to install it in FS9 on my "D" partition on the other hard-drive but the Install Wizard only allows me to
to install it again to FSX as no choice of paths is given. Has anyone else got FS9 and FSX installed on different HDD's or partitions and if so how did you do it please.?

Well herein lies my problem. I was told that I couldn't do it that way. OK bear with an old fellow and explain how I should do it please.
At present I have the Topo files sitting in a folder "temp" how do I proceed from here.

That isn't in the support forum but I will sort that out once I get this topo into the FS9 program. Thanks for the tip.

FS9 .....Direct / Put Red Baron NZ Topo to the main Addon Scenery folder , when opened you should have 3 folders - the scenery and texture and the one you have install , Red Baron NZ Topo . From there simply install the scenery typical with FS9 .

From this folder you can copy and paste this folder to the FSX Addon Scenery and follow almost same install as FS9

Please confirm that I have understood this. I have a list of 143 topo files in a folder marked "Tempy" which I copied from my FSX topo surely I just don't move these files into FS9 "Addon Scenery" Is it that simple.?
At present if I open "Addon Scenery" I just have "Red Baron NZ Mesh" which is all I have installed at present. If I move these 143 topo .bgl files there is nothing to open. Am I confused or what.?

It seems I can't say this often enough -- the Topo installer doesn't just copy files, it also renames some of the default files to disable them, so you can't just copy the topo files to FS2004 and expect it to work.
The SimPilot site has a list of files which need to be renamed -- I've also seen the list here recently, I think Mike supplied it, so go looking.
There is another method which springs to mind -- presumably the topo installer will find FS2004 if it has a proper registry pointer, and FSX doesn't, so you could try this:

Run the Registry Editor (Start: Run: Regedit)

Find the entry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\flight simulator

You should have an entry for 10.0 and 9.0.

(If you don't have an entry for 9.0, or the EXE path doesn't point to your FS2004 install, then that's your problem.)

Highlight the 'flight simulator' folder, and export it (File: Export... give it a filename)

Now highlight the 10.0 folder, and delete it.

You should now be able to exit Regedit and run the Topo installer, which should find FS2004 rather than FSX.

When you've finished, restart Regedit, and import the 'flight simulator' entries (File: Import -- browse to the file you exported earlier.)

You edit the Registry at your own risk -- don't play around in there:)

(1) Select all those file and make a new folder named 'Scenery' put them into .

(2) Make another folder called Red Baron NZ topo

(3) Put the 'Scenery' folder (1) into your now main RB NZ TOPO (2)

From here you can copy and move this folder to FS9 or FSX

Ian, Thanks very much for your help and patience. I am now clear how to tackle it.
Toprob and Snowman, Yes, I am aware what I have to change in "ocen" once I get topo into FS9. It is a pity that you are NOT given
the choice of 'path' as described in the Installation notes in the Manual. Cheers.

I can't get it to install. I go 'add area' "addon scenery" click on Red Baron NZ topo. Look in: Red Baron NZ topo"
Directory: MS FS9\addon scenery\Red Baron NZ topo. Scenery area title: Red Baron Topo.
As usual click on OK but it won't install. I am about to give up LOL.

I am in trouble again with this Topo.
When I load FS9 I get a window "SCENERY.CFG file error. Local scenery directory (Red Baron NZ Topo\SCENERY) in scenery area.040 not found.
Click OK to continue". After all the changes I made yesterday I didn't try to run FS9 and assumed it was ok.
It looks like I have it in the wrong place.?

Looking in my directory d:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator9\*.* further down under (Modules) it shows (Red Baron NZ Topo) Should that be in (addon scenery).?

It is all starting to fall into place LOL. Another question. When the topo files are changed in "ocen" from .bgl to .bglx does that disable the whole contents
of the file or only part of it.? I presume it is only part of it otherwise you could just delete them eh.?

All files you keep if your not sure , they , being very small wont affect anything .. or they can if you try to install another addon .

I moved that Red Baron NZ Topo directory into Addon Scenery but it still comes up with Error window when I load FS9. How can I get rid of this.?
