light beacons?

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

I'm working on a scenery and want to place light beacons, like those seen at Kai Tak. Are there any around? If not, is there a way to place lights ontop of a tower?
FSX
thanks

Im not sure what you mean exactly by 'beacon' but you can either use Library objects or an effect.

There is an effect used in the default Las Vegas scenery which casts a light straight up like a searchlight? Is that what you mean?

Otherwise, there are a few in the default library- Just use the Object placement tool and cycle through the items to find what you are looking for or use the list of library objects which is pinned at the top of this sub forum

Oh Ok....well, there are a couple of default items vaguely similar to the item in the left part of the pic- Go to the default FSX Whenuapai and youll see a couple

Otherwise, you can attach effects to models using an attach point defintion in GMax
Alternatively you can just place an effect in an absolute position using XML

do you mean lead in lights? Some airports have these to assist pilots on the landing approaches to the active runway like Whangarei for example if you look at its AIP chart you see them there.

Sorry wasn't too sure what it was called and beacon seemed appropriate.

Yeah like the beacon thing on the left, like on approach to runway 13 at Kai Tak. I am using a default fsx tower thing and it looks okay, just checking if something better was out there.
How would I write a light effect xml? So say I have the object, say a tower, and add a light ontop? Is it as easy as writing lat, long an height (in a certin format)? If so where would I find a template? And would it always be on?
As you can tell I'm new to scenery stuff and this just has me stumped

Well seeing you can build models are you using Gmax and if so you can make a model and attach a effect to that using the run script tool and press attachtool/effect then choose the light you want and attach to the object ...now one thing i should mention here is that the object you attach it to will dissapere in fs so i make a little plane and attach it to that ,there are many default effects lights with delays and stuff so just have fun finding out which one suits you ..
fx_lightobsRedflash is a good one or are like this name or there are beacons etc ...

ps dont try cloning them it doesnt like it just attach a new effect each time to a new part /plane

Actually I'm not building my own models. Everything I have done has been with default objects I found when I opened the stock airport. I have tried gmax but have found not extremely difficult but once I make the basic building I don't know how to compile or add textures. I have looked at the tutorials on windowlight.co.nz but they seem to need some experience I don't have.
Back on track...so I can add the effect to the airport xml then compile or is it harder than that?
