Grass Textures

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Naki » Tue Jun 17, 2008 11:51 pm

I somehow lost my orginal grass textures when I installed PicNIC grass textures. I have done what the PicNic manual suggest to do to bring the originals back but the blasted textures are still there. I no longer want Picnic textures as it quivers and is annoying - they do look quite good though. Can anybody tell me what the orginals textures are called or if possible email them to me?

Cheers

I believe its "detail1.bmp" in scenery>world>texture.
there is a back up of that default texture in "photograss" by Moskvin Stanislav at AVSIM (some like it better than picnic) or you could get it off one of the fs 9 install cds

Paul you can stop the shimmering by backing off the MIP setting in the sim, a notch or two.
BTW I've found Truegrass v1.3 to be less grainy than PicNic

I use Truegrass as well and I'm very satisfied with it.

I believe "detail" that is actually the texture that sits on top of all other textures to make them look more detailed than they are.

The default grass texture will be something like 12B34su.bmp (cant remember off the top of my head- its a combination of Region, landclass and seasons.....but the region can 'fall back' to region B since grass looks much the same around the world)

Great thanks for the responses - might try out the truegrass textures. I think I may have also been searching in the wrong place as well.

I'd be interested to see some different compassion screenshots between each default, trugrass and picnic- I noticed you had a really neat set installed recently in your Taranaki tour Paul, but didn't realise that was what PicNIC looked like.

I have a copy of PicNIC on CD that came on the cover of PC Pilot a few issues ago, but never bothered to install it. Bit blotchy pixeled grass textures nearby runways are one of the things that really annoys me in FS9.

I'd like to see it too - my grass looks like a rugby test was played yesterday in the rain.... wub.gif

Having said that, I've changed it some many times over the years I can't remember what I've got.

Thanks for posting Hugh - FSX looks really good with PicNic...
Sorry I meant to say FS9 Truegrass "Sunny Yellow" - others also look a little like a ploughed field.
You maybe have one of those to add to the series?

My personal pick from TrueGrass would be the "Sunny Yellow" as well Charl.
Seconded by the "Heated" one.
I found "Natural" to be too dark and grainy, and "Cooled Dark" to be totally un-natural and dark as the "Black Hole of Calcutta".
Made everything around it dark and dim as well........... UGLY.

sunny yellow- nice! thanks for tip, might stick with this

picnic version3

fsx picnic version 5 makes fsx as green as it will get on my sim

fsx default

The great GNZLAP AI shows up even in small NZ rural fields like this one (NZKF) - I never realised how much immersive AI would make the sim-won't fly without it now , thanks so much Charl Steve and Ian!

Yup AI is kind of wil o' the wisp - often people say: "So where's the AI" but as you say: I've found it's more reasonable to remove it and ask "How did I ever get along without?"
Thanks again for the update, interesting to compare all these textures.
Not all work all the time, but you can get some good effects with the right colouring.
I've found Truegrass "Sunny Yellow" to work best for me on the re-textured Coromandel photoreal airports, for example.
