Maybe we should call it a Screenshot Art competition then?

I like it! I think that's all that's needed - something to describe exactly what it is.

My vote is for "No".

I see screenshot competitions as a competition as to who can make the game in question look as good, or as realistic, or as "arty" as possible.

Its a competition where your only tool should be FSX, or whatever other game.

So editing the screenshot after you have taken it is kinda cheating.

I don't have a killer PC or the disposeable income to upgrade either, but I don't see that as being a critical handicap. I can fly with my usual detail levels, then pause the game, crank up the detail to max and wait a few minutes for my machine to catch up with autogen etc while I'm still paused :)

If you want to have a photoshop competition, then fine, but don't call it a screenshot competition.

Perhaps all that is needed is a name change then.

My vote would be a BIG no. The basic idea is to have the best pictures of your FS as you can with the machine and addons you have. This is the real challange. It shouldn't be about Photoshop effects, and real photos... :o

Hmm, the poll results are very close on this now it has had time to gain more attention. If anything, they favour pure screenshots. I can see benefit to both (adding photographic elements and keeping it pure FS) but I don't think they belong in the same competition. I think if we call it 'screenshot art' or 'NZFF Banner Competition' or whatever, that is fine, but I still think there is so much skill involved in making a pure FS screenshot look jaw-droppingly impressive that we need to acknowledge this also.

Given votes are pretty well near tied, maybe it's again time to consider having two separate competition 'classes'? It would be a shame to lose half the entrants just because some people couldn't see other's opinions.

For those who are taking a first look at this issue after reading the newsletter, there is a discussion herewhich I'd encourage you all to read.

I can't see the benefit of having two separate comps -- if we received hundreds of entries (and hundreds of votes) then that may be an answer, but that isn't the case, it would just fracture the comp and lower the interest.

I agree, I think that two competitions would not be a good idea.

There may not be as many entries, but seeing as everyone would be happy, there may be more entries?

Here comes the answer, in a blinding flash of inspiration (I am at my best before the day starts).
You could, at the whim of the Banner Boss (=Trolly), have a screenshot comp one month, with present rules.
The next month, or any other month depending on interest, you could have a Special Banner competition where Anything Goes (on a NZ flightsim theme), including Screenshot Art.
That way, both sets of aspirations are satisfied, and the arts of Screenshot, as well as Screen Art, are fostered.

Or heres another ,lets put the rules back the way it was for a year and a half ,also you should look at the people that have so much to say about this poll ,over half of them have never entered the comp ???
Editing your shot is more than just putting in real world images in it ,its filters /glows /heavy blurs /lighting levels /special effect filters ..none of which is actually wrong ..
the new rules came about because two persons decided to put full photos behind a screenshot of a plane ,then some new guys to the forums thought they would pipe up and complain how they where so hard done by and how there lame pc wouldnt ever be able to make screenshot like the top guys "poppy #### "
reminds me of when i entered a gif animation screenshot ,no where in the rulz did it said it had to be a jpeg, just a screenshot ,just so happens mine was moving
you should of seen the complaints come from the woodwork ..Holly hell i didnt expect that after 4hrs of my time making something different for the banner...

it takes a screenshot about 30secs to be made plus loading time "the only thoughts is where and what aircraft what angle ?? Wow what a effort that is for a $40 us prize ,and there still only about 20 tops that enter ..

my edited shots about 1hr to 4hrs depends what i need to do ..then i only have a 1 in 20 shot at winning a $40 us prize

id say the people that put effort in and thought to there shots to make it look the best for the banner shouldnt be pushed into kindy garden screenshots comp because they know more than others ...

WE dont need two comps "what are you thinking man "
We dont need one month here and one here for the kindy garden SSers
All we need is people that Vote for the SShots they like ,thats all it takes to sort out

we can all still have our comp together with both types of entrys ,if one guy wins because his one is better than 15 jagged shots ,so be it ,thats life and this is a comp ...

Id be more worryed about the members that sign in with more than one user name and vote for polls and there own screenshots ,if i wanted this to swing my way id just have to sign up heaps and vote 10 times

Hi Team, This is my first post, and not having been using Flight Sim for very long, I am amazed at the passion out there! I think the what we are trying to achieve is to get the best out of the package as it is, so lets not get into the editing with this or that package, lets just do our best with what we have aye? :)

:hesaid: genius mate... I love it... +1 for that banner! :P

Joking aside, I think you raise some very valid points... and I still dont get why people dont realise that if you dont like something... dont vote for it...

if the majority dont like editing and dont vote for edited shots... the edited shots will not win...

Charl, your absolute fairness and logical explanation of the clear facts really deserves more recognition than it gets on here IMHO. I was going to do up one of my own aviation photographs and insert the tiniest possible element from FS to show what I thought we are potentially opening up. But after reading your post again, I thought... "Stop it Richard, you don't need to aggravate this situation".

The only thing that gets me about all of this is that some people just can't, or don't want to see the views of others as being valid. I started off strongly in favour of 'no edits' but I have since realised, through reading the posts of those in favour, that there is merit behind allowing them so have moved to my present stance of 'middle ground'. This still doesn't have the support of everyone, nor did I expect it to, for reasons mentioned above.

I'll admit to being a little disappointed at the lack of respect for others that has been demonstrated on this post at times.
