I've got both a PS3 and a 360, I'm not going to go into details for each with power etc.
360 - Love the controller, it's solid, and I know the controls having never owned a PS2 and only played the PS1 rarely. I particularly rate the 360 triggers over the ps3 ones.
I've had 3 ring of deaths on the 360 - and will not be buying anymore games for it - I'm on it's 3rd year - so when it goes next time, not if - but when, it will likely be outside the time M$ will fix it.
PS3 I've had no issues with. Love the blu-ray and the HD gaming using HDMI - certainly preferable than the system the older 360's have (360 Elite has HDMI). I love Burnout Paradise, haven't tried the 360 version to see if they are comparable.
Online - 360 has the right system - online games released weekly, though I find some are a waste - interface is very friendly, and way better than the PS3. Online gaming, I haven't played a lot - generally can't find anyone - and you have to pay.
PS3 - They don't accept my credit card, you can't buy a pre-pay card from EB or anywhere else, so I can't test their online games that you can buy - I own about 60 on the 360 can't even buy one on the PS3 - and I spend hours still playing the downloadable ones for the 360. Interface is very basic, and takes a bit to get use to, but gaming is free - networking was easy as it has a built in wi-fi system.
360 is partially backward compatible - but I don't own any of my old Xbox games.
PS3 the newer models are not - and I think that's a problem, as there is still a sparse amount of games for the PS3, and being able that you can buy cheap ps2 games, it's a real loss.
Some of the newer games are large - and the 360 is starting to suffer from the multi-disc scenario - and I think that's only going to get worse - especially since M$ have backed the rapidly losing HDD format. - Although of course that doesn't come standard anyway - so it wouldn't surprise me if they release a blu-ray one, but jeez they won't be happy.
I think (personally) 360 has reached it's pinnacle, it may stay there for a while, or it may not, but eventually the programmers are going to find better ways to utilise the ps3 processors, and then we're going to see if fall behind I believe.
Look for the next '360' sooner rather than later - 2/3 years - where as the ps3 could very well last 4/5 more.
My opinions - and really I'm not going to say one is better than the other, because there is a couple of years apart between them - and that's something everyone tends to forget.
