Start menu items.....GONE!

I am so annoyed at xp and firefox. two hours ago when trying to surf the net it decided it needed to install plugin of somesort(don't remember the name) so I though start downloading then instantly cancell, quit firefox and start session again. Little did I know that it instantly INSTALLED instead of download. I then got virus warning c**p so I instantly unplugged my internet (to stop it spreading to my dads pc) restart, uninstall and do a few virus checks. Everything seemed fine...until I clicked start. Almost everything in the 'all programs' menu was gone. The programs still installed, just removed from the start menu. I have restarted my pc a few times to no avail.

I'm sure I saw a thread like this before but can't find it.

Any help is even more greatly appreciated than usual.(I hate telling my brother that I "stuffed up" the pc.

Ok fixed. System restore worked. I didn't realise that system restore creates a restore point every day
