Beech 18 From Alaska to New Zealand

Share your simulated flights around NZ here. The place to post your flight reports, flight plan instructions and progress on tours

Postby SENECA08 » Thu Mar 27, 2008 12:57 pm

In a weeks time I plan on bringing a Beech 18 back from Alaska to New Zealand. I will be using the Beechcraft D18S, by Milton Shupe.

Im just wondering what I will need to do complete my journey.

This flight will take place in Flight Simulator 2004.

I would really apreciate any advice.

Find out the maximum range for a fuel tank of fuel of your aircraft, then deduct say 100nm from that value (to allow for head wind, diversions etc) then plan a flight route using the FS2004 create a flightplan tool, checking the distance of each leg in the navlog. Have fun

...take a compass, and a good book!
Also, be sure to load up Real World weather (With Updates) otherwise the flight doesn't count! :plane:

Well a search on avsim.com has lead to some good scenery:

Fairbanks PAFA
Anchorage Ted Stevens PANC,
Honolulu International Airport PHNL.

Tahiti will be a stop hopefully on the trip depending.

By the way how do you add pictures to the forums??

If you are using Active Sky, learn to read the Winds Aloft figures -- careful choice of cruising altitude can make a big difference to your ground speed and range. (Don't forget to factor in the wind speed and direction when calculating range in miles - aircraft range is normally specified as endurance in hours at a specified power level)

Make a series of test flights to determine your exact fuel burn in all phases of flight. Do this by using one tank for the test and the other tank for the rest of the flight (e.g. for cruise fuel burn, taxi/take off/climb on the left tank. Then fly exactly an hour cruise on the right tank, switch back to the left tank for descent and landing. And so on.). Don't forget to measure the contents of the test tank before and after!

Don't rely on the built in flight planner for range/speed calculations - it's not that accurate. Use your own numbers as calculated above

FS aircraft don't have the option of ferry tanks. Where you would need them RW to complete a flight, it's considered acceptable to adjust your fuel levels in flight in FS. Figure 10% over MAUW for calculations.

This is your one stop shop for freeware scenery: http://walhalla.mine.nu/fs2004.php

The flight has been delayed for a few days due to my partner giving birth to my daughter.

I still plan on doing the flight but with work and family to deal it maybe delayed for longer.
