The tides gone out - a cry for help.

An area to discuss scenery addons for virtual NZ

Postby Bazza » Mon Dec 10, 2007 10:27 am

Installation of Lawrie's recent series of airports has highlighted a problem I have. In each case I find that the nearby water, (i.e. rivers, harbours etc) is not present. The areas that should be covered with water are covered with "generic" land and spattered with strange Microsoft looking buildings. This is particularly noticeable at Whangarei where there is nowater at either end of the airstrip, Dargaville same again with the bridge over dry land, and Whitianga.

I am running FS9, Red Baron 75 metre mesh, and have the NZ Lakes fix. As per instructions in the Red Baron read-me's, I have the Terrain Max set at 21 - it was at 19 but neither settinghas made any difference.

I have correct water levels at Rotorua and Tauranga - running Real NZ.

I do not have the NZ Topo and don't feel that this should be necessary, although I may have to look into this if all else fails. The Red Baron instructions suggest that the siting ofthis in the Scenery Library is not important however shifting it up and/or down has not made any difference either. I can reload the Red Baron again but again can't see how this would help.

Hopefully someone may have some ideas on this ?

I was reading today in afcad tips and tricks that place airports or taxi ways close to the water could have some weird effects ,
QUOTE
When drawing such roads, do not place them too close to rivers "“ the
flatten which is built into a taxiway "road"Â￾ will cause some very strange
visual effects when too close to a river.[/quote]

Then i remeber also someone saying something about flattens switches and how they mite stuff up things ,think robin or someone mite of mention that "notsure"
i know this mite not help at all but its more maybes for thought and mite help someone else remeber ...

Thanks for your thoughts...........unfortunately two of the airports concerned, Whangarei and Dargaville didn't have flatten switches...?

Can you post a screenie? Hard to tell what's going on with out pictures. Neither SPE mesh nor lake fix cause this...

Thanks Christian, herewith two screenies that will explain what I'm getting at...

First one is the view from the coastal end looking roughly south - Whangarei harbour area should be straight ahead and the township to the right.

Second shot is looking towards the sea, which as you see is nowhere near the foot of the airstrip but miles away.

It is the same effect at Dargaville where the bridge sits on land.

At this stage I am considering a complete re-install but holding back on that and not panicking.

When you installed NZWR, is it possible that instead of disabling the flatten file in Scenery\Ocen\scenery, you disabled something else instead?
The flatten file is called FL994440.BGL. There are other files ending with 994440, all related to this area, but without the FL in front. If you accidentally disabled one of these, you'd get this result, I suspect.

Thanks Rob, checked that out but hasn't helped. All flattens and excludes seem to be in place. I suspect that the problem predates my
installing the Whangarei scenery and that the causes are far deeper....for e.g. the Whangarei flattening BGL shouldn't have any effect on
Whitianga, Dargaville or Napier. This seems to be a problem effecting inland waterways where there is a certain amount of land mass
surrounding the water. In each case the land concerned appears to be flat enough to be covered by the water, if it existed. Is there a
file controlling water areas ? I have fiddled with water textures over the years and am currently not over impressed with the effect that I do
have.

It might be useful just to check that you have the water file for this area -- it is called HP994440.bgl, I think, and should be in Scenery\Ocen\scenery.

Thanks Rob,

I have checked and have no file of that "name" as you have suggested.............

I noticed that there were about 11 HP files in the immediate area that had been "stopped" by adding an X to the .BGL, i.e. BGLX, thereby
cancelling them out temporarily. I tried reversing this but it had no effect so returned them to as they were....

Where can I get HP994440.bgl ?

That's the default water polygon file for the top of the North Island. Maybe someone knows what has disabled your water polys, but if you don't have a replacement from somewhere, or a disabled version (or backup) of HP994440.bgl then it may be time for a reinstall.

Thanks for your help Rob, I think I know where I can get a copy from without too much drama.

If it covers the North half as you state that sounds like a pretty likely source of the problem. I'll let you know...

Funnily enough, my HP99440.bgl file been re-namrd to .bglx as well, but the water still shows in my sim ..... ?????
Wouldnt be Red Baron NZ Topo that has re-named these files ????

Thanks to TopRob and Snowman - I now have water approximately where it should be.

In the world of the Guru, there's always someone who knows less than you do. I have been helping a mate with his flightsim and he thinks that
I am pretty switched on. Fortunately he doesn't visit this forum so I let him believe that I know what I'm doing. Tonight while helping him tune
his new joystick, I "borrowed" his scenery file (Scenery/Ocen/Scenery) via the modern wonder know as a pen drive.

As was suggested by Rob it restored my water scenery. There are a couple of other scenery issues that have now raised their heads, but the
major problem is solved.

Thanks for your patience, and advice guys...thank god for NZFF.
