wow man thats too bad. Try running a check disk on it. I did it once, and it fixed all my problems.
Set checkdisk to check the disk and repair the errors it finds.
Not sure if you can do this without being in windows.
Could be either the mobo or the HDD. Try putting the HDD into another SATA or IDE port on your mobo. Also, try changing your cable.

You should be able to run chkdisk from the recovery console... or from a boot disk... there are some good DOS boot CD images floating around that have lots of nifty command line tools...

I found the recipt under a massive pile of envolopes. Gave my dad the recipt number etc. and he talked to the people at Atech. He bought another hard drive and was given "memtest" because apparently RAM errors can sometimes exactly the same as hard drive errors. As the RAM was not the problem i put the hard drive in today and all is well!(we can't take it back but hey the PC works) I'll probably try to get a refund for the broken hard drive(bought jam 03 2007 so well within warranty) Thanks for all the advice guys. Much appreciated
