Rotorua Textures

There is probably an easy answer to this, but when I installed Rotorua into FSX some of the buildings and objects are black. I suspect this is a texture problem. Can anyone shed some light on my predicament.

Are you installing the FSX version, or patching the FS2004 version?

check out the Real NZ website smile.gif Robin has released a patch for Real NZ Rotorua that fixes the problems you mention as well as add new FSX specific features. www.windowlight.co.nz

While you are downloading that, be sure to download my free 'Tarawera' scenery which compliments the aerial photography with Real NZ Rotorua. It can be downloaded from Avsim.com file name 'BOPVolcanones_Tarawera.zip' or search on my name (Tim Barnes)

In reply to Toprob I Have installed the 20004 patch. I have looked for an answer to the problem on the Real NZ web site mentioned by Timmo but I saw no mention of a patch. Is this over and above the FSX Update? Perhaps my glasses need cleaning. I shall look harder....Old age has it's problems. Got the BOP scenery. Thats next to install after I've got this sorted.

I assume from what you have said, you've installed the FSX patch over the top of the FS2004 version. The patch and the update are the same thing.
Getting the scenery to work in FSX is dependant on the rather abnormal installation. First, you need to make sure that the FS2004 version is installed in your main FSX folder. This will give you a folder called Flight Simulator X\RealNZrotorua, if your FSX installation is standard. If not, the RealNZrotorua folder needs to be in the main FSX folder, whatever it is called.
Then when you run the update, it should point to your main FSX folder too. There should be no reason ever to change the installer's installation folder.
If you generally store your scenery somewhere else (such as Addon Scenery) then you can move the RealNZrotorua folder ONLY after the update.
If you have done this already, then the fault may be something else, in which case we'll need to do some debugging.

I have rechecked the installation path and everthing appears to be in order. I think perhaps I might do a reinstall and see what happens

I found another entry under a new folder called Flight Simulator 9 I deleted this folder and made sure that only one entry of The Rotorua scenery was present. I still have black buildings and objects. Any clues please Robin??

Is it possible that the new folder under Flight Simulator 9 was the one you meant to install in FSX? If you don't change the installation folder as recommended in the update instructions then it will end up there.

Just to reiterate how the update works:

You need to install the old FS2004 version first, so that it is located in the Flight Simulator X folder. Once it is there, (you should check to make sure) then you can install the update.

Thank you Robin for perservering with a thicky like me. A complete reinstall has cured all. The scenery looks stunning on my setup and is a credit to you. I look forward to Getting Tauranga updated. I am experimenting with settings at the moment. I know that most recommend throttling the Frame rate to say 20 odd in FS9 but does it apply to FSX.

I've got this problem as well - do you think it would work if I just copied the RealNZRotorua folder from the FS9 directory to the FSX one (then ran patch etc.)? smile.gif

Yep, that'll work. I'll quote here from the readme, just to have it here as a reference, not to insinuate RTFM:)

This update requires that the original FS2004 version of Real NZ Rotorua is first installed in FSX. To install the original FS2004 scenery in FSX, you can either:
a) if you already have RealNZrotorua installed and working in FS2004, copy the RealNZrotorua folder in its entirety into the main FSX installation folder -- normally Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
b) or install the original version from the Real NZ CD or download. To do this, you will need to browse to the FSX main installation folder when you run the installer, making sure that the resulting path accurately represents the FSX folder.

Once this is done, you can run the enclosed installer -- RNZrotoruaFSXupdate.exe.

The installer will obtain the FSX installation folder from the System Registry. If it is unable to find this, it will default to Program files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

If the installation path shown differs from the main FSX installation folder where you just installed the original scenery, you will need to navigate to the correct folder.

If you normally choose to install your addon scenery elsewhere, please install as recommended and then move the resulting folder -- RealNZrotorua -- wherever you wish.

After the installer extracts the scenery files (this may take some time as there are a large number of files involved) you will need to activate the scenery within the simulator.

Ah ok, thanks Robin.

Don't worry about insinuation anyway - I don't know what RTFM means. laugh.gif

Alex

Edit; Ah wait - I think I get it. laugh.gif

Thanks, Peter, glad you got it sorted.
I have never been able to get good performance from either FS2004 or FSX with unlimited FPS, but other people say different. I think you need to try both for a while and see what works best for you. The more powerful your system, the more likely you'll find unlimited a better option, but it does depend a lot on what you value most -- smooth performance, good visuals, or a combination.

I guess The whole thing comes down to compromis in trading off performance for eye candy. I am able to get a good mixture of both so I'm happy. In saying that though I have very little in the way of add ons installed yet so that could slow things up a bit. Keep up the good work Robin. Be assured it is appreciated in this neck of the woods......Roll on Tauranga

Cheers
