Gauges

Discuss aircraft addons and repaints for Flight Simulator here

Postby Bandit » Fri Sep 14, 2007 3:37 pm

I was after some feedback on how members manage their Gauges folder.

I'm running FS9 and when I add aircraft in some cases you need to copy gauges from the download into the main FS9 gauges folder if the default ones aren't being used. I'm OK with this and don't generally have any trouble.

Now if I decide that I don't like a particular aircraft and uninstall it the gauge is going to be left sitting in the main gauges folder.

Sometimes multiple aircraft use the same gauge so obviously it shouldn't be deleted. But any suggestions on how to determine if a gauge sitting in the main folder is no longer required by any of the aircraft you have installed. In other words how can I stop the clutter.

Is this what addon managers are used for?

Personally, I always keep the gauges that come with downloadable aircraft in the panel folder of that aircraft. If I have duplicates, well, no matter ... I have duplicates. Makes for a tidy FS Gauges folder.

I use Flight Sim Manager to delete aircraft. It removes gauges and looks through the rest of your fleet to check that nothing else uses it before backing it up and deleting it smile.gif

(i just change the date to 2005 on my computer so I can still use it)

Try googling "Doctor Gauge" it's pretty simple (ie basic) but it does the job.

I always fiddle with aircraft after I've installed them, so never have an original re-installable zip file.
So surplus aircraft get cut to another drive, and can later simply be pasted back.
This means I have a 1.5GB gauges folder with 15,000 files which stays put with the latest version of a particular gauge.
I also have a panels folder (400MB) and a sounds (1 GB) folder.
All aircraft get aliased to these
Interestingly this doesn't seem to slow down load times.
What eats resources is
- the number of aircraft (which then call up everything that's needed) and
- scenery addons.
I am about to have a major cull because my system is getting lazy due to aircraft overload, currently 32,000 files occupying 19GB
Don't know how it happened, really...

I know this is alittle off topic to what you guys are going on about ,
While reading through hover control Jordan moore had something intresting to say about how to tweak your panel cfg to help in those heavy loading vc gauges in your fav aircraft if not all of them .
Just have a read of what he does to make your hardest hitting frame hogger "vc panels gauges " in this topic Hovercontrol link to panel cfg tweaking
id be intersted to hear what you results mite be ,,

Interesting pointer...Capsim 757 springs to mind.
That one used to slow a computer down to walking pace from the VC.

Aye! An interesting find, indeed.

Unfortunately, Bill Lyon's Grumman Goose VC already has a low pixel count (nothing above 512); what kills this particular VC is that there are 17!!! panels.

Although I did find one anomoly: each pixel count is suffixed with an "s"; removing these appears to have made the VC a tad more fluid.

Thanks for the pointer.

Flusifix will clean up gauges as well as provide all those useful touches to your fs9.cfg
