New Graphics Card

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Alex » Sun Aug 05, 2007 12:00 am

Hi guys,

I was thinking of replacing my current graphics card (Radeon X700 - 512Mb), with something from the Nvidia 8series, probably something similar to this. I was just wondering if anyone knew of some reason why I shouldn't do this, or if I was getting this one, it would be better to get x product etc. smile.gif

Thanks,

Alex

I've been useing an 8800 gts for the past month. I'm not overly impressed by it. It's OK, but only just.

Just make sure you have at least a 500 watt psu as a minimum. And don't even install the drivers that come with the card. Dpwnload the latest from the Nvidia site. Then run Nhancer as well

Yeah you'd only go for the 8 series if you know you can't live without DX10.
What's that you ask? Good question, it was going to make FSX look good, before they released FSXI and had everybody go back to square one.
Still no sign, although I believe VISTA is about to go stable with some real-world drivers.
My ATI Radeon 850 PRO produced more beautiful graphics by far.
(Erm, did I mention it's still available because nobody wants an AGP card?)

A 320 MB 8800 would be false economy, I have 640 MB and I believe there's more on offer.

Concur about the drivers - for XP and FS9 I've resorted to the Combined Community Codec pack (!)
Uh Jack, are there any performance advantages in using Nhancer??
I thought it just made life a bit simpler, to navigate the feature set.

Well, in the end I decided to get a GeForce 7950GT with 512Mb (details also in my sig). It was over $100 cheaper than the one I was thinking of, and I'm not sure after next year if I'll get much simming time in, so I thought I wouldn't splash out too much. smile.gif
