Anyway, I wont go into all the gory details, but I will say that there was a... "incident" with my video card, and it is no longer working. It is now on trademe as a broken card. It was definitely out of my level of knowlege of how to fix it, and seeing as I have plenty of money to splash about, Ive decided to take action. Enough said
So, I had a spare $200 of cash lying about (as you do
), and went out shopping. I opted for the 256mb Asus Geforce 8600GT, and a beefy cooler and some ram sinks. OK, so its not the best nor the fastest of cards by the looks of things, but I can assure you, after a volt mod or 2, and some overclocking, it will be eating 7900GTX's for lunch.I liked this card because of a few things:
1. It is faster at stock speed than my ex heavily overclocked 7600GS/GT
2. It is DX10. Call me crazy, but I dont want to get caught with the need for DX10 some time in the next 6 months, and only have a 7900GS (which was my other, more expensive alternative).
3. As you know, I love my modding, and overclocking (my old card as an example), and the 8600GT fulfills this. By overclocking it, it can surpass 8600GTS speed (equivalent to 7900GTX), and hopefully, it gets right up there with the Radeon x1950.
4. It uses a tonne less of power than ATI's and the 7900. (it doesnt even need a PCIE power connector)
5. I am the sort of guy who would say, "Here is a brand new video card, which is already fast enough for what I need. How can I make it faster?" Obviously, the 8600GT is a whole lot more fun than most cards because of its potential to overclock, and be modded.
So, it should be here by Tuesday or Wednesday, and hopefully, we will see some amazing screenshots from FSX by the weekend.
Any comments/suggestions/death threats?
