Make sure you get in a couple of weeks prior to when you want to sit the test, and they only do it Mon-Fri, so unless its school holidays, you'll probably have to take some time out of school. ;)

I have to disagree with this... they have exactly the same problem in AU that we have in NZ. The 2 years I spent there, the news was full of the same stuff... young teenagers driving vehicles at ridiculous speeds killing themselves, their friends and innocent people...

i can't remember the number of times I saw pictures of a lump of metal that used to be a car, with a P-Plate stuck on it, wrapped around a tree or lamppost :(

and everyone in AU was asking exactly the same questions... what can we do to stop this?

I do not understand it, I got my license when I turned 15... there were 5 multi-choice tests in those days, and I just memorised the answers to all of them. + 3 verbal questions which required some knowledge of the road code.

I got some driving lessons and learnt some very useful techniques like clutch control (sitting on a relatively steep hill, holding the car in place, backing up, creeping forward, backing up, holding in place etc. without using brakes) and how to use deceleration forces and coast into traffic lights/anticipate traffic to afford heavy/sudden braking.

That cut my learners period to just 3 months... then I did a defensive driving course (in 1 day!) that cut my restricted period to 9 months... I had my full license in 1 year... at the age of 16!

But I guess I was never bitten by the "must do donuts and burnouts and drag-racing"-bug or something?!?!?

Alex wrote: Would you be able to explain the system used in Australia in a little more detail for us Chookie? How do you get from one license to another, and what are the main restrictions? :)

Alex

There are the restrictions

Learners:

Your BAC must be zero.
L plates must clearly be displayed on the front and back of the vehicle.
You must ensure all occupants are properly restrained by seats or approved restraints.
You must not drive faster than 80 km/h and must observe the speed limit where it is below 80 km/h.
A person who has an appropriate Australian full licence (not a learner or provisional licence) must sit next to you.
You must not tow a trailer or any other vehicle.
You must not drive in Centennial Park when in Sydney.

P1s:

You are restricted to drive an automatic vehicle if tested in one.
Your BAC must be zero.
A maximum of three demerit point is permitted during the term of the licence.
P plates must be clearly displayed during the term of this licence.
You must ensure all occupants are properly seated and restrained by seatbelts or approved restraints.
You must not drive faster than 90 km/h and must observe the speed limit where it is below 90 km/h.
You must not supervise a learner driver.
You are allowed to tow light trailers up to 250kgs unloaded weight.
You must not drive any vehicle with eight or more cylinders, a turbocharged or supercharged engine (diesel powered engines exempt,) modifications that increase engine preformance, any other vehicle identified by the RTA.

P2's have pretty much the same restrictons, only they have six demerit points and they can drive no faster than 100 km/h

Now I've got some stats somwhere about accidents ...

So by saying this, you are implying that all teenagers develop at exactly the same rate, and it is impossible for a '15 year-old to have the life experience to have the voice in their head that tells them when things start to go wrong

teenagers do have something incommon with all other teenagers
frontal lobe not fully grown until 21 and the reaction times and preipheral vision of potenchel* hazzards is incresed the younger you are
this does not change just because your more mature than your peers its a fact ,so incresing the age limit to when your frontlly lobe is more developed on a over all perpective would help with the problems that we have with all young drivers on a whole
and anyway arent we trying to stop people driving and using public transport .
there is nothing wrong using buses and meeting up with your mates or even just bloody walking
<_<
15 fine ,but these unexperances younger drivers are putting me in my car and my children walking to school at risk of being hurt or killed
i dont see anything wrong with putting the age upto 18-20,at lest you will get alittle more excersize ,and do your part for the envoriment ?
isnt that what they teach you at school anyway

Another part of the problem is that alot of the parents buy their children high powered cars when they are on their learners and this is a big temptation if the parents arent at home and the car keys lying around, then they take the car out for a drive then total it injuring themselves and possibly killing someone else, so i reckon some of the problem lies on the parents.

Exactly! Bring in compulsory third party insurance ban anyone under the age of 21 from getting insurance on a high performance or modified car, restrict them to low cc rating.
Dont allow anyone to drive solo until they have passed the Full test and last of all dont give anyone a full licence unless they can prove in the test they can drive a manual (unless for medical reasons).
Passed my test at 18 had 40 hours lessons minimum before was allowed to sit my test. But then again neither am I one of the hot shot boy recers who thinks its cool to do doughnuts, burnouts and what ever other stupidity they think is cool.
Although do like a bit of off road ;)
Last thing I want is to be mowed down like those 3 cyclists in the Hawkes Bay by some kid in a lethal weapon. Sorry if the 15-18 brigade on this forum does not like that honesty maybe your tune would change when you saw the misery those "accidents" cause

Then again, a large proportion of accidents is also caused by the people outside the 15-21 age bracket, but when these happen there are no people crying out "what can we do to stop this carnage". :ph43r:

I have heard that these speed limits are not enforced by some other australians. Is this true as i personally think that the 80km/h limit could almost cause more accidents due to other drives behind them getting irritatted. Just my thoughts though.
