Heroes of the Pacific

A single forum dedicated to all other non Microsoft flight simulation games

Has anyone played Heroes of the Pacific? If you haven't I'd really recommend it. It's themed so that you're a pilot for the US Air Force in the Pacific during WWII against the Jap's. You can pilot 36 incredibly detailed WWII classic aircraft and fight in 26 missions stretching over the entire Pacific campaign. You can also play online with up to 8 players.
Pretty awesome, great graphics of the ground, but the only bad thing is that you can't land properly, just fly through the hoops!!! ;)

The physics of it are completely realistic, aswell as the planes.

I strongly disagree there Kelburn. I believe that HOP is one of the most realistic sims i've played. Eg. The stalls are super hard to fix normally, etc.

I'd actually play the game first rather than read reviews from magazines that is not your opinion. That is someone elses! ;)

Highly unlikely it looks more like an arcade game in those videos I might hire it out sometime and check it out myself. IL2 seems a better sim for WW2 stuff and its got a large online community.

I have to say I enjoy these types of games...If not more than the Microsoft Version.

For my age group shoot-em up is certainly more fun and more popular.

In Operation Flash Point and Armed assault you can do that, if you really are hard core into that type of conflict then I highly reccomend VBS1 which costs about US $1000 with all the addons but it covers special forces type operations and insurgency style conflicts complete with the actual terrain in the middle east where this stuff is happening right now. To top it off you can get in helicopters and tanks etc(or go as the door gunner) and go to town. Like most games you can go either side if thats what you want to do. As for Comanche it really isn't my style although good on them for making a new version I'm looking forward to lockon Blackshark which will be the mother of all helicopter sims nothing else could ever come close from what I've seen so far.(not even FS helicopters)

I'd say :o

It's worth more than my computer and I'd know rather what I'd have.
The only simulator I'd buy which was $1000 would be a proper large one like flight experience has.

If FighterOps is $1000 US when its released I'd buy it tommorrow so long as I got an F-16.

Its not for flight simmers its for professional soldiers. ;) . Some of the guys in my Clan Seawolves Marine Corp and 2 dedicated VBS1 servers. The game itself is worth US$239 but the full set of VBS1 is US$1177 and VBS2 is US$1802.

Check out VBS2
Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2â„¢) is a fully interactive, three-dimensional training system providing a premium synthetic environment suitable for a wide range of military (or similar) training and experimentation purposes. Supporting rapid terrain development, VBS2â„¢ offers large, realistic terrain areas (up to 100km x 100km in size) with an unparalleled level of environmental realism.

VBS2â„¢ is a fully-featured training tool including After-Action Review capability, HLA/DIS compliance, and a comprehensive yet easy-to-use mission editor that allows any imaginable scenario to be created and then modified in real time. Mission design is improved with a new "point and click"Â￾ interface and the capability to edit directly in 3D.

VBS2â„¢ can be specifically tailored to meet the individual needs of military, law enforcement, homeland defense, and first responder training environments. VBS2â„¢ can be easily deployed on laptops or desktops over a LAN or through the Internet, delivering cost-effective solutions for worldwide interactive training. VBS2â„¢ is also suitable for a wide range of analysis tasks and is shipped with data logging and latest After-Action Review (AAR) functionality.

The final release version has a wide range of functionality never before witnessed in similar products.

The release version is fully featured, including:
Realistic motion captured animations
Authentic sounds and weapon discharge effects
Robust tracer modeling, accurate tracer/ball ratio and "dim tracers' that bloom through NVG
Ballistic model incorporates coefficient to allow for a 99% match to real-world ballistic behavior
Projectiles can penetrate permeable materials such as wood and tin
Projectiles will ricochet when striking a suitable surface at a suitable angle
Enhanced iron sights, weapon recoil and weapon movement
Massive detailed environments (up to 10000kms^2), including As Samawah and Green Zone terrain areas
Varied and detailed foliage
High dynamic range rendering
Wide selection of ADF and USMC units and vehicles (over 200)
A range of middle-eastern unit and vehicle representations
Improved Night Vision simulations
Fully functional TALON Robots
Fully functional UAV simulation
Multiple fully functional gunner positions per vehicle
New vehicle interaction interface
Accurate vehicle animation depicting functionality of doors, hatches and more
Interact with manipulate objects, e.g. traffic cones, CP signs, road spike strips
Completely new Real Time Editor allows scenario design during operation of a training mission. Can now edit in 3D mode in addition to 2D mode
An entirely new After-Action Review system
NATO marker generation and marker overlay system
Fatigue and suppression models for infantry
Real-time day/night cycle, accurate starscape, sunrise and sunset based on unit's latitude and longitude location
Variable weather, sea states and changing tides
Accurate moon phases (influences visibility at night)
Four training mission tutorials covering basic movement, weapon firing range, navigation and section command
Comprehensive User, Administrator and Editing manuals
The VBS2â„¢ library which allows all vehicles and weaponry to be tested
HLA/DIS gateway (available separately at the end of April)
All Armed Assault game add-ons

It can only be purchased at the VBS website. The other option is Armed Assault which should be what you would be into. Dick Smiths has Arma, it has a massive online community and the usual FPS tricks won't work with ArmA. You get shot in the head thats it you're dead. I have the earlier FPS game Operation Flash Point which Arma was developed from. You can get anti-terrorist mods for Arma and OFP and Arma also supports 6dof with trakir its quite amazing to watch.
