Random "Lockups"

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Jimmy » Mon Jun 18, 2007 6:12 pm

Its happened three times now so thought I may as well ask :(

Completly randomaly my mouse will freze and the keys wont react eathier, even Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't do anything, I still have the image up on the screen, showng the frozen mouse but the only way to shut it down is to hold down the big power button. Even pressing the power button on the keyboard doesn't work for this (the power button on the keyboard that would normaly initiate a normal shutdown, not a good key to knock!)

So yes, its happend with IE7 open, with FF open, with fs running and not running, one time I had teamspeak up front.

Completly random and rather concerning..

Thanks in advance for any help
James

P.S sorry for yet anothor question :(

I had that. I can't remember whether it was the RAM or the graphics card but was one of them. It only went away when we replaced it.

oh it may have been the hard drive.

One more thing do all the normal clean up hard drive, spybot and adaware etc. Also dust out your case as it may be overeheating

One thing which I've noticed whenever I do any serious alterations to my system -- sometimes the IRQs can get messed up, with some conflicts which Device Manager doesn't pick up.
To test this, just unplug everything you can -- joystick, mouse, keyboard, any cards you don't need, all USB devices -- and restart. Plug in anything which can be attached while powered -- USB devices only! -- then shut down. Add another device while its shut down, then restart. Do this until everything is plugged back in.
If this doesn't work, then you can force as ESCD, which resets IRQs. This is normally done via the BIOS setup. This isn't the ideal way to start with, but worth a try after doing the previous bit.
Of course this won't help if it is a faulty component or incompatible RAM, but has got me back up and running twice in the last few years.

didn't you just upgrade your PC? if so then i think it is a faulty component

Click the start button, goto control panel, click on administrative tools and then click event viewer, sometimes this can give you a clue as to what is happening. You can look at applications or system. It writes up a log file for events, and these can be deleted quite safely.I use it if I ever have problems.

as said, check the system log. Also, make sure everything is properly seated in their slots. Reseat all of the ram sticks, followed by the video card. If the problem isnt fixed here, check your northbridge cooler (a bit random, but the same happened to me when my NB cooler needed thermal compound replacement)

I have the exact same problem. It started yesterday. PC boots up normally and I getabout 30 seconds of normal use before the mouse stops responding - cursor moves around but cannot action anything. Also the keyboard does not work.
PC works fine in Safe Mode. Only thing I did was load a couple of windows updates the day before, but my son used the PC after that without probs.
Virus checked the PC but no probs detected.

If one or other of us solves this then please reply back. Luckily we have internet access at work so I can send out an SOS like this !!!

Deane and Jimmy, If you havn't already done so, I suggest before playing around with too many other things, is to complete a system restore back to the day before the problem arised at that point you can determine wether you have a software or hardware issue.

From past experience when issues like this arise, system restore has fixed it. Even if you get a virus, taking the system back to the previous day will remove it 99.9% of the time.

I have used the event view (located in control pane / admin tools) to look for errors under the system heading. I found numerous errors from previous days, but the one which was persistant evrytime was related to a piece of software which allows me to securely connect to my work system. Even though I had not used it or done anything to update or onfigure it in weeks, my problems were cured once I removed it.

I will restore it again and see what happens.

So suggest Jimmy you look at the event viewer.

I have just had this really annoying problem that relates to the random freezing whenever I start up the Squawkbox program for VATSIM. It happens every time and I can never go online!!!!!
Does anybody know what I should I do?? :plane: :plane: :plane: :plane:

Or he could have neither. If you have problems with IVAO Mark, you know I'll always be happy to help you sort them out. Most people don't have problems with IVAO. ;)

It seems we've all experienced this to some degree. I have gone and replaced my power supply unit from 300W to a 520W Thermaltake one. It was $75 new from PC Gear in Dunedin. I only bought it today and will install tommorrow. I'll post back here and let you all know if it's made any difference.

Happened again, I checked the event log and theres absolutly nothing, just a log of were IE7 craped out and then nothign untill "remote accses" when I came back online after I restarted...

I think im starting to figure it out, as far as I can remember photobucket has been a constant everytime, just viewing my photobucket albumn, I was posting screenshots at the time of this last one, IE7 almost always craps out at least once when im at photobucket, and althought the lock ups (perminent lock ups remember, so only way to end is holding down the power button) happen with typeing in msn, ts infront or typeing in IE7 or anything I think photobuycket my be trigering it somehow just in the background, is that possible?

Thanks
James

Just happened again, this time I had the ARNZ forum open in one IE7 window and was typeing into a "surveymonkey" survey when it locked up.

Holding down the power button to get it to stop really can't b good for my system..
