Ready for my upgrade!

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Jimmy » Thu May 17, 2007 12:57 pm

Hey guys

I now have $300, and I and I want to upgrade my system to at least the following:

3.2ghz dual core Pentium D
AGP 8x motherboard for my 7600GS 256mb

I already have a 450W PSU, two harddrives, my AGP 8x graphics card (currently running at 4x) and 1gb of RAM.

My new motherboard will have to support my new CPU and AGP 8x graphics and DDR400 RAM.

If your asking why I don't want DDR2 and PCIe? Well I recently brought an AGP 8x card so want to get my money worth out of that first and iv had 4x graphics for so long I don't think having 8x for several more mounths shoud be a problem. In the furture I plan to buy a new mobo, graphics card and RAM then do anothor upgrade for PCIe dx10 graphics.

I know a guy who will put it together for me so that shouldn't be a problem.

I just need you guys to help me out with what to buy.

Simply what I need is the CPU and the mobo. I am not sure about weather or not I need a new case, if I can afford it I woudln't mind a new case eathier, required or not.

I would prefer to buy online, from pconlineshop as they have been quick and easy for other hardware items, but if thigns are avalible cheaper elsewhere online I will shop for the cheapest.

Very much thankyou in advance :)

I would try and save up a bit more. With $300 each between me and my brother we got a 7600gt, Athlon 3700, DVD writer. I know this isn't helpful but just to show you what you CAN get for a little more ;) I think this would be better than the 7600gs. I know it says discontinued but you might find it elseware. I'm not good with Intel CPU though.
Good Luck

reeelax ;) i didn't even see your post originally

Here's one I found on PCONLINESHOP: http://pconlineshop.co.nz/pcshop/produc ... 4bb7dcadaa

Spotted plenty of other motherboards on pricespy, just browse down the list of motherboards under Socket 775 and look for AGP
Here are 2 I picked out, reputable brands with good features, Intel chipsets and plenty of suppliers

Asus http://www.pricespy.co.nz/pno_4387.html

Gigabyte http://www.pricespy.co.nz/pno_8436.html

Run a google search to find which one you might prefer. I like the Asus one is better but it's slightly more expensive. Sadly neither from PCONLINESHOP.
As for the Pentium D, there are plenty of suppliers on pricespy, shouldn't be too hard to find a good price. Remember tho that these motherboards won't support Core 2 Duo Processors.

Thanks Tim.

So I can't get a AGP and DDR mobo that supports dual core? Are all Pentium D procesors dual core?

So, I could buy this CPU.

Is that dual core? I would also be happy with virtual dual core.

and is this suitable? Theres no details there and I have no idea as to what the name of it means.

Thanks again

The motherboard looks fine to me. http://www.superwarehouse.com/Asus_P5P8 ... /p/1483860
specs^

The cpu should fit in. I suppose it is socket 775

If you by any chance do any CPU overclocking, or memory overclocking, be sure that this is possible ;)

All Pentium D processors are dual core and will work with the motherboards that I picked and the one you picked.
But "Core 2 Duo" is the name of intel's new dual core chip, and that won't work with any AGP motherboard.

So I now have a little over 300, not much thow.. so I will buy the following..

This Motherboard

This CPU, I also consider this CPU, it is alot more expensive, is it worth it? I can barely afford it, any harm in just going for the 3.2 and putting that extra money towards a new monitor?

Thanks for finding that Motherboard Tim, well in my price range and looks good.

So, I will purchese these tonight, am I making a mistake?

Thanks

To be honest I dont think the 3.4ghz one is worth it. If you really want a 3.4ghz Pentium D, I think youd be better off overclocking a 3.2 one. Especially for that price. Also, I dont think that .2Ghz would make much of a difference, especially if your video card will be holding it back (my 7600GS is i think.)

yeah well I plan to use this CPU in a future new mobo and PCIE DX10 graphics card so it wont be getting held back then. But as you saty I could always "overclock", however you do it, iv never done it  Thanks brownbox :D

So simply put a 3.2ghz CPU has the power of 6.4ghz? So I can have fs running on one core and all the other programs on the other? I'm still not entirly sure how Dual cores work...

Thanks

$100 isn't worth the extra 0.2GHz, go for the motherboard and the 3.2GHz
as for how dual cores work, it's not really 6.4GHz. that's about all i know.

Yea, with Dual Cores the clock speed doesn't really give an accurate indication of how the processor (as a unit) will compare against others. Although I am not really sure what will - usually more $ = better. But you only want to take that so far. ;)

well it isnt exactly twice the speed, but in the ATI "are you Vista ready?" test, my CPu rated at 5.8Ghz.

yeah well I plan to use this CPU in a future new mobo and PCIE DX10 graphics card

Dont bother. Pentium D is about as useless as you can get when it comes to dual core CPU's. Its pretty much Intels last minute, half assed approach to a dual core CPU to compete with AMD, so it is old technology. Sure its not bad, but it is generally bad value for money, expecially when a Core 2 Duo can be purchased for a little more $$$. If you are going to get a new mobo for a PCI-e DX10 card, then Pentium D will most probably be extremely useless, and core 2 duo will be much more useful by then.
Just my "2 cents"

provided the pentium D fits into his new motherboard, it shouldn't be an issue, especially if he can't afford a core 2 duo yet.

The parts arived yesterday! Tempting to try and put it together myself, but should really just get my friend across the road to come and do it for me, and ill give him my old P4 in exchange

But "Core 2 Duo" is the name of intel's new dual core chip, and that won't work with any AGP motherboard.

Theres a little sticker on the motherboard box (a lovely box :P ) "Supports intel Core 2 Duo" But only says P4 Pentium D and celeron CPUs.. interesting..

The mobo is absolutly tiny, hope its the right size for my case

Bah, give it a go! Thats how I learnt about how to stick a computer together.. trying, breaking, buying, trying, successing, breaking etc. Ahhh an endless cycle...

Anyway back on topic.

I brought that 3.2ghz CPU

Mines only 3Ghz... THIS means war

Best of luck to your computer component assemble, and may FPS be with you
