More than just learn - experience!! Where else can one become a captain of an aircraft the size or Herc, Orion or 757 while still in their 20's !!

Ive probably got it closer to the middle of the two. Obviously the flying isnt anywhere near the RNZAF, but out lecturers are 95% ex-airforce bringing with them heaps of experience and knowledge. I realise that the theory is different aswell but I lost count of the number of stories told in the first week.. :P

You'll probably wind up flying typhoons if you go fast jet.

Sorry mate - you need a reality check - the Air Force is doing more these days than they ever have. Afganistan and East Timor are very busy, we do more O'seas exercises than ever and still do the usual Ice cube and SAR etc. Just coz we have no jets does not mean we "don't do much". In fact the jets only ever trained, they rarely if ever did "real" jobs.
On top of that all the aircraft are being upgraded or replaced.

Although it may seem that the Skyhawks weren't doing much they were infact NZs front line in defence and were a deterent against other countries. Now we only have P3s as a deterent which although it may seem NZs remote location would be good enough its not really. It makes nz appear weak in the eyes of some nations and effects trade as well as alliances with other countries. But thats history I guess hopefully future governments might consider reversing the situation and get some F-16s or even Mig29s/Su27s. It doesn't take much for Governments to change that and such things have happened before.

Maybe not F-16s as they are getting quite old now, but maybe the F-35 JSF, that would be ideal for NZ but not for our neighbours across the ditch.

That would actually be the coolest thing in New Zealand's history. (unfortunately the chances seem about as likely as a NZ moon expedition...)
