Howdy guys, On the 11th of May at 1250 a Challenger 604 VH-OCV will be making a brief stop in WLG (Image I have taken before of this aircraft). It will depart again at 1315 and as if that wasnt exciting enough for you all, on the 20th of May at 2100, an Olympic airlines A340-300 will be arriving in WLG. It will depart the next day at 1700. Of course all of this information is subject to change at any time.

Perfect, thats the day (the 20th) I talked James into to going to NZWN, now we know what time to be there.

You aint going to see much on the 20th, it arrives 9:30 at night! :lol:

I dont believe there has been an A340 in WLG before.

Wellingtons runway is long enough to handle 747s and 777s. A340 shouldnt have too many problems, it isnt going to be heavily loaded.

We have nearly 2km worth of runway, you can get a 747 400 in here but you cant fly them out full. QF used to operate the SP model out of here and the Queens 777 operated from here a few years back. The main problem is where to park the bloody things <_<

nearly 2km? would that mean with the planned 630m extension at Rotorua that it would be longer than Wellington?

If they are going to add that much to RO then yeah, itll be about 200m longer than WN

I thought they were only adding 480-500ish metres to the runway (at Rotorua), I'm not sure of the people that live around the southern threshold would let them add a lot more... :ph43r:

Those people that live there, do they even own their houses or does the state? they arent exactly the nicest........ then the other end has that marae that always complain (or so ive heard)

Right on the southern threshold there I think the houses are owned by people (although wouldn't suprise me if they were owned by the state). But just about 1km down the road there are some really nice places.

They don't want to extend to the north because there is a forest of Kahikatea (sp) trees (which the local iwi protested wildly at when it was proposed they be trimmed so as to prevent them growing taller), as well as a school and buildings (which have already moved twice afaik) - also owned by that iwi.

Houses built before Dec 2005 will have 'noise-reduction' measures retrofitted; extra ceiling insulation, air conditioners, extraction fans etc so they don't have to open their windows (seems like pretty half-ass measures to me) done by the Airport Company, although I'm not sure what sort of area they are talking about doing this for. And this excludes any other schools/organisations which will need to be done as well.
