two seperate days spent "at work"

first was up in 'eagle' just a few general shots as we were a bit busy most of the time.

then back towards town

only lasted about 1.5hrs but three jobs and three catches.

then there was the B744 sim day - about 5hrs total for 3 of us.

I got a takeoff and climb out towards the north with a quick lesson on the TCAS and then we flew the new FMS trial profile in to intercept the ILS05R then I took over to hand fly the ILS to touchdown (successfully) then we reset and did another takeoff and at about 25000 did a decompression and went onto the masks and did the full emergency descent and shut down No4 engine then we also had a fire in No3 engine and did the fire drill and shutdown and returned on 2 engines to NZAA. the instructor did that approach unfortunately. thats just a quick run over - it took heaps longer and you really felt quite tired at the end of it - but the grin is only just starting to fade a week later! I WANT ONE!

If thats the Air NZ 744 sim, What does the Auckland Scenery look like?

Lousy! it is the 2nd oldest 747 simulator and the graphics are nowhere near the new sims so to make it look more realistic they fly it on night settings, even then its pretty basic but still good enough to do the job especially when the sim itself is what you are concentrating on. even still - I WANT ONE _ NOW!

I take it thats motion, what does it feal like? Is it that realistic? Can they simulate the fealing of acelerating down a runway?

the full motion is done Very well - all the feel is there - to the point that one of the others did a really really heavy landing and if we had not all been strapped in then someone may have got hurt! we all got flung hard forward, all the phones in the back of the sim came off the wall and books and carkeys went flying. it was VERY realistic.

getting up in Eagle is just a periodic famil flight that we get from time to time with the police just to get an appreciation of their ops and for them to ask us questions about our ops.

Also that 747 sim looks great, I've been in the 777 one and the full motion really is fantastic, which makes up for the crappy scenery

Thats all they have isnt it? Night settings?

I had a fly on this years ago with Dave Monds after months and months of trying to organise a visit. Dave gets on the phone, rings the AirNZ switch board and 5 minutes later we had a slot for Friday night!

Still, was probably the most "immersive" sim I have ever been in

Re simulators.

If anyone is interested, then several airlines offer the chance to fly their full motion simulators (for a fee!!). I have tried the United 747-100 in Denver, the Lufthansa 747-400 in Frankfurt and the Thai 777 in Bangkok. With full motion, the sensations are VERY realistic, although the graphics are below what we can get with FS9. One huge advantage is that they have simulator instructors who do all the programming, leaving you to concentrate on the flying. It is easy to forget when instrument flying that they are actually simulators, the sensations are so real. The good news is that FS9 with RealNZ add ons and a good mesh still gives the 'pro' simulators a run for the money, even without full motion.

Also, the BA one can be flown at Heathrow.

In Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown you can fly the Flight Experience simulators, full B737 cockpits compleate with FS9 and Real NZ loaded. They are not full motion, but the next best thing!
