Some years ago when I was undertaking flight lessons at Hawera I flew the club's 172, ZK-EOS, from Hawera to Paraparaumu and back. Recently while walking at Nelson airport I saw EOS again - probably down for a service.

Anyway, I took a couple of photos and made this 3D anaglyph (you need red/green glasses to view in 3D). I actually uploaded it to Panaramio, so you will also find it in Google Earth if you zoom in on Nelson Airport (and have the Panaramio layer active).

Very cool but I seem to have misplaced the glasses
How about a stereo pair that one could do with a mirror? :ph43r:

How long ago were you flying in Hawera?? That is my Home town, born and raised there, but left in 1986 when i was 18.
My parents still live there and I spent a lot of time at the aerodrome (Dad flies R/C models). I have flown in EOS too

Nice Lowerellyex. BTW, how do you get pics of that area? ZK-TJL is sometimes there, I want to get a pic of it. Did you walk up to the fence or did you have to go airside?

That's just taken from the walkway at the end of the road.

I was flying at Hawera in 1994, training in the 152. I lived in Hawera for 6 years before moving to Nelson.

This is known as an anaglyph. You need to start by taking two photos of the subject, shifting the camera a few centimetres left or right between shots (less when main subject is close). Constructing the anaglyph is fairly simple in a photo editing program like Photoshop. It involves removing colour, then replacing the red channel of one image with the other image. Different people have slightly different methods. For some good detailed instructions for doing this in Photoshop try here.

I have made a few of these, and they're always fun. Some subjects work better than others (I'm actually not all that happy with the Cessnas). You can adjust the positioning of the red channel to change the part of the picture that is "level" with the frame (in this case the monitor). In a true anaglyph, this should be the closest subject, so that the whole picture extends behind the frame - but sometimes it looks cool to have stuff "sticking out" of the monitor.

In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.
