The company involved in a skydiving incident which claimed a man's life yesterday is refusing to discuss the incident.

Witnesses say the 32-year-old hit the ground at speed and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood he was an experienced parachutist, who was on a solo skydive when the incident happened at Mercer in the Waikato.

He was jumping with company NZSKYDIVE, which is based in Mercer and also has branches in Queenstown and the Bay of Islands.

A spokeswoman for the company says a statement will be released later today.

How sad :( I remember thinking how terrible it was that a US skydiver got her parachute tampered with and jumped to her death only last month. I wonder what caused this incident?
