If you wish to get a PPL for 17, I would recommend, working as much as you can and saving every penny you earn, (im not to sure when your b/day falls in the year) but wait till the next summer holidays, and do everything from ground course till PPL flight test in the 7 weeks you get, you'll be flying everyday and not having much of a life during that time, but will work out cheaper and you will pick up everything a lot quicker..... I have learnt that consistency and repetition is the biggest teacher, I started flying full time in July and am about to sit my CPL flight test, had a PPL in October (after being stuffed around with my schools Part 141 certification I was ok to sit my flt test in Sept - bloody CAA). The other way of flying once every 2 weekends for 2 years, may be more fun when you are 15 (because you get to fly) but it doesn't really make the process go quicker, it will cost you more, and will make it harder for you to learn checks and other things like circuits would be hard I imagine.

Also consider a university degree before the ATPL: Unless you turn out to be an exceptionally talented flyer, excessive youth and lack of "world experience" will count against you with the airlines (but maybe not with the RNZAF), plust you'll have a fallback should things go awry.

I have a similar goal for the future, when I approached the RNZAF they told me I need to have LVL2 or 3 NCEA English,MAths, LVL2or3 physics they didnt say anything about economics or learning any foreign language.
You can always email the USAF and ask about your options for achieving your goals of being an astronaut, I will be taking that approach for my options on being a NASA test pilot.

The way to get student loans is through Studylink

If that helps :P

Economics or business studies because flying airliners is more about resource management than flying; languages, because when you get that job with Air China, you'll be glad you can speak Mandarin....

By Astronaut I'm sure you mean a flying the space shuttle astronaut, not a person going for a ride for scientific purposes (I think the teachers and stuff that have been in space, have been the latter)

The shuttle is being phased out in a few years so if he makes it he will more likely be in one of these:

With Jimmy's approach to things, he'll just buy NASA and get them to design him a custom ship.
You have to set yourself goals, no matter how impossible they may look from where you sit.
Nobody ever achieved anything by saying "I can't".

Of course you have to set goals, but I disagree that you should set ones that are most likely impossible.

As I said, I would love to be an astronaut, however I know it's not gonna happen, so instead my goal is to become an Airline Captain.

Who knows, perhaps space flight will become a common thing in 40 years and I will be able to re-establish my goals to become an astronaut!

Anyway, good luck Jimmy. You would become a national hero if you were to become the first New Zealand astronaut.

I no a great person who has done a lot off time at the 'NASA space camp' visit's and very sure done shuttlesim time in Alabama US , Christchurch Girl , I just wonder if i can find her address , sure she could answer a lot off questions for u space Junkies :)

Hey Alex , PM incoming , Idea , What about a folder just for the FSX Space , could say it well out there in its own catergory. We will also have our own Real space Consultant , spent a lot off time in this area , anything SPACE related can go direct to the folder.

Got to get the ball rolling quik on this subject ... don't want to thrown in the back to cool down with other ideas :)

Go for your dream James,I did and I got to be an ag pilot. It's a lot of hard work but the sense of achievement is immense.Aim high,Go hard,at the end of the day you can only do your best.I had a school teacher once who told me that your best is never good enough.Took me a year or two to figure out what he was saying. He was right. You have the dream now all you need is commitment, and when you have a dream like you have the commitment is never far away.Do what Trolly said,do the school subjects that will help you on your way,It starts NOW.

Hey James
G-HEVN's prices were a bit unrealistic for NZ because it's so expensive to fly in the UK, I think 30-40 grand is realistic for CPL, more for a frozen ATPL or a C-CAT rating. Personally at this stage I'd prefer to fly RNZAF or GA aeroplanes than jets so on top of the CPL it's another 15k?

Yep, student loans are going to be the order of the day.

There's good reason why it's called Rip-Off Britain.

Those pricings sound about right; I've just taken a $32,000 student loan which doesn't cover PPL but fortunately I had a reasonable amount of money my parents have saved for education fees which has helped. Basically you have to anticipate spending a lot of money, and potentially not making a lot for quite a long time.

The loan does cover your PPL, it may not cover the PPL ground course which is only $500 or something, but school will refund you when the loan comes through, I've just sent off for the 2nd part of the loan which will cover my MEIR, and C-Cat, im not looking forward 2 seeing my statements...........

Also consider a university degree before the ATPL

Publicity Stunt begins: Massey may help you conbine both :P Their Bachelor of Aviation gives you everything except the hours for a ATPL. End of publicity stunt:

I know a few people who have been to massey, but wouldnt speak highly of it. Do they still have the allocated day a week for flying? Most schools can offer a bachelor of aviation thru another school, NMIT do it thru griffith university in Oz

Most people at Ardmore, all schools and clubs included, dont speak highly of it...

The schedule is now weather dependant too... so when the weather is conducive to flying then flying happens.

From what I believe only 3 places in NZ can offer a degree at the moment: Massey, Ardmore Flying School, and Nelson Aviation College (if thats right? that big place in Nelson lol).

get a contolling job! they put you through the courses and then put you on an airfield with reasonable money going into your pocket especially for a young single type - most people I know ( that stayed single) ended up back in the cockpit and NO STUDENT LOAN! at the moment they do make you pay but we are fighting that! but the world wide controller shortage is really starting to bite now so if you pushed the issue you never know they might change their minds.
