I have a formatted harddrive on our family computer (not my one), and I cant seem to get the computer to boot from the cd to install windows xp on.
So, is it possible to put the hard drive into my computer,copy the files from the windows xp cd over to the harddrive, then run the setup from the hard drive on the other computer?

go to bios change the boot from cd thing first before harddrive

This Family PC was it running XP before?

I rebuilt two PCs of similer specs and one will not accept Windows XP only the original windows 98.

That is whats happening too me, it jsut wont boot from cd, even if I change the boot order to ALL being cdrom it still just loads up as usualy!?!? Obvesly has no effect

I woudl love to knwo a way to get it to boot, iv tried so many key comands during start up

are you saving on exit from the bios?

i have set mine to boot from cd in BIOS, and it says booting from ATAPI CD ROM:

Thats it, it just sits there. You can press all the buttons you want, but it doesnt do anything. No, it had Windows ME on it before, but it should be able to run XP. Theres nothing to loose, since we dont have the ME disc anymore

We are going to run XP on the trail 30 days, while we buy another one and activate it

the problem Jimmy is having is that his windows xp cd is not a bootable one
so my suggestion is to create boot disks: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

This is what Im gonna do. Coppy the folder to the formatted hdd, then run it from a dos boot disk.
