I agree - great thread - its got me figuring out how to simulate a tank in the barons cockpit for an extended overwater ferry - for a long overwater pacific flight.

( maybe load it as a 200kg passenger and every hour top up the fuel tanks and reduce the pax weight by the same weight of fuel burn to simulate a ferry tanks weight and balance movement?)

Yep me too- great thread so far

I can't belive that FSX scenery is default! It certainly is a BIG step up from FS9, and sure looks pretty, no matter what sort of FPS you might be getting ;)

Yup. Scenery is entirely default. I did try some FS9 addons earlier, with mixed results, and will continue to do so as and where they're available. As for frame rates, I haven't looked in a while, so I don't know what I'm getting. The sim is certainly flyable with my current settings (although I do keep playing around with them!), and no jerkier than FS9.

Leg 8: Tunis Carthage DTTA to Djerba Zarzis DTTJ

A comparatively short leg this time. Not, as rumour might suggest, because our intrepid pilot scared himself witless, but because for the time being we have to remain inside Tunisia. Despite the best efforts of our behind the scenes movers and shakers, we haven't managed to secure permission to enter Libya

This is the Carenado 206. More room. More power. 140kts cruise. Nice! The Dak is still being, umm, cleaned. Ho hum!

user posted image
Even the controller must be getting his own back for yesterday, and we were made to taxi almost two miles to the far end of the runway. Of course, we were off the ground before the second set of piano keys!

user posted image
Not only that, we'd already reached 2500ft by the upwind end of the runway.

user posted image
It's a nice change to have a flight that's not dominated by mountains. We did cop some strong thermals from the desert sand though!

user posted image
Haze crossing the Gulf of Gabès is obscuring the beaches of Jerba island

user posted image
Crossing the coast on right base for Zarzis runway 27. Djerba is the biggest island off the coast of North Africa. It's hot, it's dry, but it's not the featureless desert FS would have you believe!

user posted image
Final, and the rather nice virtual cockpit

user posted image
Crossing the threshold. Djerba was also the setting for Mos Eisley in George Lucas' Star Wars films.

Now, because we're running a bit short this time, I thought it would be a good idea to give a recap of the journey so far. In the graphic below, the cyan line represents the original Oxford 2 Oxford road trip, and the red line is our route. We've travelled 2974 nautical miles in 22.5 hours, at an average ground speed of 132 knots.

You might also notice, the last few legs have been at the same latitude North as New Zealand is South!

The map is from Encarta Atlas 2001, which came free with one of my PCs. Not particularly sophisticated or configurable, but you can zoom in/out to anywhere in the world. And it was a great price!

Leg 9: Djerba Zarzis DTTJ to Iraklion Nikos Kazantzakis LGIR

The Libyans are still blocking our route to the East, and we're faced with tough choices: Wait here in Tunisia in the hope that the metaphorical wind will swing in our favour, or detour around. Well, the wait could be days, weeks even, and we may still not get the required permissions. The route to the South is long - back into Algeria, Niger, Chad,Sudan, and would mean missing out Egypt (which the team were particularly looking forward to) or doubling back again. The route to the North, although involving lengthy over sea crossings is much less arduous.

And so it's decided: Malta and the Greek island of Crete.

Stage 1: Djerba Zarzis to Malta Luqa LMML, routing direct across 220 nm of open sea. For this trip I'm using the Carenado 182 RG. I'm hoping the retractable landing gear will give us an advantage should we need to ditch, the smoother hull being less likely to pitch us over onto our back. Still, we stuff the plane full of emergency supplies, check our PLBs and life jackets, and head off.

user posted image
Lined up on 09, ready for the off. I decided to try out a freeware FS9 version of Zarzis airport, but to be honest I shouldn't have bothered. This was about the best, most complementary shot. Pretty much all the buildings would disappear or sidle away as you looked at them. The default FS9 stuff was still present and showing through. Even in this pic you can see one-and-a-half control towers!

user posted image
Enroute and crossing the sea. To be honest, I'm glad I filed IFR for this one. The extra comfort of knowing ATC knows where we are is reassuring. We're over the to of a thick layer of overcast in very gusty conditions.

user posted image
Nearing the Malta coast now. We've lost the undercast, and the vis has improved, but it's still gusty as anything, with lots of windshear, and we're being tossed like a salad!

user posted image
We opt for a visual approach, since it gets us on the ground quicker! Once again, the otherwise very nice FS9 Malta airport scenery presents us with a confusion of FS9 and FSX runways...

user posted image
No confusion here. Didn't we meet this guy in Algiers?

user posted image
And so we're on the ground. Note the nice shiny International terminal. We, on the other hand have to taxy to the far side of the airport to find a dingy old shack! Here we can refresh ourselves and the plane, and prepare for the even longer sea crossing to Iraklion.

LMML - PLH - IRA - LGIR. A whopping 525 miles across the sea, in just shy of three hours. Oh joy! Fortunately we should have a decent tailwind. So it's back into the immersion (aka "blobby") suits, and off into the wild grey yonder. Malta is a stunning island, and I'd have loved to show you scenes of the departure over the medieval Valetta harbour. But in Microsoft's eyes, it's just a brown blob. Shame really.

So, fast forward to...

user posted image
We're at 11000ft over the sea, and this big rock looms out of the cloud to greet us. Welcome to Crete! The map tells us the mountains are only 7500ft high, but from here, I'm not so sure!

user posted image
It takes a further 20 minutes of being acutely aware of mountains hiding in the clouds by our left wing, and open sea beneath our right before we're finally cleared to descend. Almost everything we can see disappears into the clouds!

user posted image
At last we're on final and cleared to land.

user posted image
The plane is parked up on the apron. The crew are parked up in the bar, having a much needed beer!

Leg 10: Ice Cold in Alex

Iraklion Nikos Kazantakis LGIR to Alexandria Intl HEAX

SIT - BRN - DBA - AXD
What a difference a day makes! Today, when we have a Baron, which would have made mincemeat of yesterday's weather, we've got CAVOK! Ah well, them's the breaks. Still, the spare engine's a comfort over the water.

user posted image
We're loading up at the same time as the Thompson tourist charter back to Blighty. Hopefully, we'll be away before them.

user posted image
What joy! You can see the airliner still queuing for departure, and there's a little Cessna in front of him!

user posted image
A couple of right turns and we're heading over the water once more, this time to Egypt.

The rather nice Greek coastlines are freeware by Yiannis Dermitzakis

During the sea crossing, I can't help but wonder about CBris' little island paradise of Kos. A low level VFR tour maybe?....

user posted image
... or possibly while away an hour or so doing touch and gos at Ippokratis airport -- I wonder what the landing fees are...

user posted image
Of course, knowing my luck, it'd be cloud barely off the hills, thunder storms and rain! Ah well, so much for idle speculation. Back to the job in hand.

user posted image
Egypt. We're about to pass over the historic battleground of El Alamein (not that you'd know it) before we start our descent into Alexandria. Not so much the beginning of the end, but perhaps the end of the beginning. So to speak.

user posted image
Final for runway 22, and looking forward to that ice cold beer...

Worth waiting for!

It's a new landing aid, similar in principle to the PAPI and VASI. It comes as part of the 'glass cockpit'. Basically, at the top of the glideslope, the glass is full. Take a swig. Stage 1 flaps, trim, take a swig. Landing flap, take a swig. Cleared to land, take a swig. Check reds - greens - blues. Take a swig. Cross the threshold, take a swig. Flare, take a swig. As the wheels touch the tarmac, your glass should be empty. If it isn't, or it's empty before you reach the ground, go around and try again.

I'd have to say the 206. It's a cracking plane, and then you get cargo and floats on top. I do have a preference for flying the Dakota, but it's an older generation of model, and it does show (although I prefer Pipers to Cessnas!). The 182 RG I found slightly disappointing. Not anything I can put my finger on, but it doesn't quite have "it". I don't have the "Q" model.

Leg 11: SF on the Nile

Alexandria Intl HEAX to Luxor HELX: Follow that river!

Departing Alexandria, and it's a lovely sunny day. Maybe we'll leave the canopy open and catch the breeze. Hmm... 160kts, perhaps not!

Before long we reach the smog that is Cairo. Then as we reach the far side of the city, looming out of the gloom... In the background, the sounds of the Sand Dance well up on the IPod...

And a quick hop over the desert to Luxor. I'd love to show you the Valley of the Kings, or the great Karnak Temple at Luxor, but they were, well, Missed By Microsoft. Sigh.
