Testing out a cd rom i found in the shed

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

I found an old (1997) Diamond Data 12x Cd Rom drive in the shed today (my bro's old one), and I decided i would put it in my pc. However, the bios finds the drive, it shows up on windows, but when I put a cd in it, it spins up, and I get the mouse cursor with the little cd picture on it, then it does nothing. If I try opening up "H" drive on my computer, the computer freezes for 20 or so seconds, then nothing happens again. I have a feeling the drive is stuffed, thats why it was in the shed and not in use, but I just want to make sure Im not doing something wrong.

Cheers

I really dont want to spend any money, as Im already very poor from my new computer and video card. I thought it would just be something worth trying seeing as theres nothing to loose ;) Considering a DVD Writer can be purchased off trademe for $20, I think I will take the pleasure in destroying it

Why with a perfectly good powerful machine which you paid out a few hundred bucks for would you want to add a Ancient CDRom?

I got perfectly good CDrom drives chucked in a box on my office floor simple because we upgraded our systems to CD writers along with the DVD players we had on our systems. Irony is those may soon be replaced by DVD writers more

Whats funnier is the 20 Phillips CRT monitors stacked up in a storage shed about to be disposed of because we got TFT screens. Talk about a waste but then at least we are no using pre windows 98 gear anymore

im in need of an old one because of two reasons:
1- It would be useful to have a cd reader, as I do alot of copying and changing CD's (No, not illegal...) and seeing as I already have a dvd writer, i could just copy and paste straight to another cd instead of mucking around, copying to hdd, then copying it to new cd
2-I would have something to plug into my spare IDE plug on the wire B)

Rip the top off and clean the laser (carefully) before righting the drive off. (If your shed is anything like mine, it'll be full of dust...)

alright, i tried cleaning the laser with a cotton swab and 99% pure isopropyl alcohol, and nothing :( Then i tried the cd cleaner thingy, which is just a cd with little brushes on it, and it worked, and played that cd right. Then, it stopped working again when i tried putting another cd in

Looks like its time to squash this piece of junk under the tractor tomorow
