DC8 Air New Zealand in the early 70's

Discuss aircraft addons and repaints for Flight Simulator here

I know they flew NZAA - Hawaii. Jim Collins, the captain of 901, had his DC10 hit by lightning heading to NZAA, he lost a fuselage skin panel but was able to return to hawaii and land safely. I also think I recall seeing a 10 tail at melbourne when I was there as a kid

I flew DC-8 to Nadi and return in a DC-10 in '78. They did fly to LA via Hawaii and Auckland to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Tokyo (not sure whether that was non stop), Hong Kong & Singapore & Chch to Sydney at least.

Cheers

I circled LAX in a DEEK 10 for an hour waiting for the landing gear to go down with Cpt Jim Collins in charge when I was 6 or so, I remember there was some kind of code share with Laker and we flew Freddies DEEK 10 to London which was fun.

Hi guys,

Re the Historic Jetliners group and the Air New Zealand DC-8's, here is a link to their new website.

http://www.simviation.com/hjg/

Some great aircraft, panels and excellent sound sets, including the latest versions of the DC-8's (updated 26 October 2006), three textures for the passenger version of the ANZ DC-8 and the freighter.
Well worth a visit.

Cheers,

David.

I've been watching a series on youtube called 'The Disclosure Project'. It's about 350-400 credible Pilots, Military people and astronauts wanting to testify to congress about UFO's and Aliens etc... Simply because the world deserves to know.
One of the best documented is the Kaikoura one in 1978 or 79 in a Safe Air Argosy.

I just watched that today, all 1 hour and 15 minutes of it. Some very interesting witness statements there! I love a good conspiracy theory :P On the other hand, I also watched a good documentary on TV a while back, where the US Government claimed that the whole 'UFO' sighting phenomenon was just US citizens reporting sightings of their own spy planes which they sent over to gather info high above Russia, and to keep them secret, they let the public think they were UFO's...

Anyway, I didn't see anything about the Kaikoura SAFE Air incident you mentioned Codge- got a link anywhere?

Hmm, the Safe Air 'event' WAS a spooky one, I remember it quite well at the time. Even the then primeminister Rob Mulddon saw something on a 737 flight to Wellington.

Conspiracy theories, well, let me tell you a little tale I was told by someone on the spot when another UFO event happened in the 60's, this time at Ohakea. Now, just between you and me, I had a mate who use to control up at Ohakea during the 60's. One day a few years back we were driving to Auckland and as we pased Ohakea he told me all about a night when the base was buzzed by UFO's. Yes dear readers, U F OOOO's.

He told me how late in the evening a number of 'vechicles' travelling at very high speed and low altitude started to buzz Ohakea airbase, what made it interesting was they came in straight, then turned 90 degrees to leave, all at a few 100 mph. The base launched a few Vampires (yes, this was pre skyhawk days) to investigate but it appears the 'vechicles' played with them, buzzing them at high speed. This lasted for an hour or so before they were lost from radar. Naturally this event 'never happened'..

In all seriousness I have no reason to doubt my freinds story, and he's got a few from that period. The closest I came to seeing a UFO was when a procession of glowing flaming objects crossed the west horizon seemingly just above the hill line, low and slow...at the time I was freaked, we later found out that it was Skylab returning to earth, amazing site!

Well, not quite on topic but I hope it was interesting.

I am finding this a very interesting subject to read about- thank you for sharing. I love debating with my rather cynical father about what is real and what isn't. We had quite a long chat about it over dinner this evening :P

That Ohakea story sounds unbelivable, I *wish* I had been there to see it. What other explanation is there to explain that apart from UFO's? There must be at least a dozen witnesses' from that night- have there been any doco's made about it?

Come to think of it, a recreation of that scenario would make an awesome entry into this months 'scary situations' screenshot comp hehe! Maybe we should make a 'GNZAAIP' (The Great New Zealand Alien AI Project)

lol, great idea. As far as I know this even has never been made public, makes sense really at the time, even today people would either say 'yeah, whatever' or 'good story, shame about the truth', or freak out. I like the A AI idea, sounds like it would make an interesting mission in FSX, hmm.. B)

There are some good UFO doco's on Youtube. I've seen the famous Kaikoura incident on one of them. It is one of the best documented cases ever reported.
In the USA there is this thing called the Disclosure Project. It wants the Govt to come clean on the subject. There are alot of very credible people supporting it with the telling of their own stories. They include top Airforce pilots and astronauts and airline pilots Navy pilots and ship personnel. In all the types who are not going to talk rubbish and who are risking their carreers by speaking out.
I'm a skeptic but after seeing the evidence I am now a believer! Why not? it would be more bizzare if we were the only ones in this huge universe!
