In the end, its around $90000  , which is heaps, but so worth it. And its what you will pay up at Ardmore Flying School (maybe a bit less).

I dont think too much about it, as its my dream to fly and if thats what it takes then so be it, because I will find the money one way or another :) :plane:

$90,000?

What license is that up to? My base course from nothing to CPL with multi-engine instrument rating was $54000, with an extra $6000 for ATPL.

Or are you flying helicopters.

Sounds like we think alike. :) I'm doing much the same thing as you, except at Ardmore so it's a "Diploma of Aviation Science" rather than a Bachelor of Aviation. When do you start?

Good luck with your course mate, I shudder at starting working life with a $90K debt though, although I guess it's the only way of realising your dream. :)

Its up to a CPL, ATPL Theory credits, Basic Gas Turbine theory, C-cat Instructor rating, Multi-IFR etc etc. So it is quite a lot included in the 90G. As well as that Im getting a University Degree.

And yeah Matt its my dream so im not too worried... yet... :P

If thats what you believe thats cool. But I have investigated it so much and believe it to be a sound organisation with good prospects for the future.

I think the really important thing is how many hours will you end up with?

Otherwise good on you for taking control of your future.

You get 210 hours after the second year, which is MEIR and CPL and then its about another 100 after that which includes the C-Cat course and a few other things. I can add 20 odd hours to that as that is what I have already done, and havnt had to paid for hehe :P

All in all it is expensive, but sometimes you gotta dig deep to follow your dreams... And no matter where I train its gonna hurt the pocket. Hence the student loan, and then there are only two options for me, I had to pick one and I did.

This kinda conversation always brings up good discussion. Whether it be on here, PPrune, A.net... :P

get an atc job - eventually they pay you, you get some of the papers as part of your job( cross credits) you get to know the local aeroclubs and where is economically best to go and a reasonable bit of time off for study, and airways has a study assistance program as well! Yeah I have a beef with them when it comes to some things but overall they're better than a lot of other crowds I've worked for. B)

I did a Bachelor of Technology and ended up with a $50k+ loan... If given a choice, I'd do the aviation one for $90k...

its amazing how much 4 years of Uni costs when you dont qualify for a student allowance and are unable to live at home :P

Unless things have changed since I left NZ when I was out at Nelson there was as "new intake" going through Pacific Origins* gass turbin course BUT those guys had a minimum 2000 hours + in their log books AND they were after what was essentially the tea trolley job of flying.

Do you know what kind of flying you want to do? Being realistic the airlines wont want to know you until you have a few thousand hours in your log book and even then you will have to work your arse off to get on to the flight deck of a 747.

I was talking to the cheif test guy for AirNZ a while ago, just after he had spent the previous 6 hours absolutely hammering a couple pilots for one of their efficiency checks in the 747 sim, and he was saying that the burn out rate is really high for new pilots. But what really got him was that so many of those guys had literally done every job possible to support their dream of flying airliners, pumped gass, washed windows, cleaned streets etc and then for them to give it all up within 2 years because they couldnt handle the stress.

So I guess, your work is only just starting and once you have finished your course doesnt mean thats the end...but merely the beginning of your career in aviation.

Regards

Mailman

*I know, those guys are long gone.

i heard that being a pilot with these new aircraft is one of the easiest jobs in the world- turn up, takes off, run the thing on autopilot, then lands (using autopilot if he really wants)

then again, i'm glad (as a passenger) that only the best pilots survive.

...and then you have a total electrical failure half way across the Pacific Ocean. :)
