Can't imagine how the economics worked!
Any idea of what it cost to transport a vehicle?
And from where to where did it fly?

Pretty sure there were two of them, ZK-NWA ans NWB.
They are basically a conversion of a DC4.
Think they used to fly Wellington to Nelson and somewhere else but it was along time ago.
I first saw them in the UK when I was a young whipper snapper (1970's ish),they used to trundle into and out of EGHI now and again although I think they were based at Southend. I think most were owned by BUA and BAF.
From memory I think they were introduced to take over from the Bristol Freighter ?
Here endeth Fridays Carvair history lesson.

What an odd looking plane- like a mini propeller driven jumbo!

Mind you, it really stands out doesn't it. I wonder what ever happened to these aircraft?

From memory, i think one of them did a bread and freight run to the islands at one stage, operating from Hamilton. When i was younger, i used to see them loading, and parking up by the James Aviation buildings at NZHN.

What an odd looking plane

I take that back, after a short flight from Woodbourne to Kaikora I have changed my mind. For it's shape, it flys extreamly elegantly and the 3D model is simply magnificant!

Also, opening the cargo door reveals a mini inside- that's just brilliant :D

Bear in mind that you need to lighten the payload quie considerably to take off from NZWB!
