Well just as I thort my computer was running well and wasn't performning to badly: I was sitting doing my english and decided I turn my pc on and have a look at the nzff. (english boring.....)

I hit the button to turn it on, the monitor was still off, I usualy leave it off untill I knwo it would have finshed starting and continued doing my schoolwork. I heard all the drives start then the normal "beep" and with in secondsof the beep it just stoped! silence again it had shutdown yet the numlock key was still iluminated. no restart, it wouldn't start up again. I switched it off at the wall and the numlock key still stayed on for like 20seconds.

I'v been trying heaps to start it but nothing. Iv made sure the plug is all conected and when I switch on or off the outlet at the wall I hear the little hisses comeing from inside the computer. So the power flowing into it it just wont start!

I had had my computer running about an hour erlier this morning and it shut down with out any troubles.

OOOO please help me :( I just can't get a new pc now, its not possible!!!

so when you turn it on it makes absolutely no sound? like no fans or hard disks?
maybe firstly check the on button isn't jammed- i know that my button jams, which causes the power to turn on, then it shuts down straight away.
have you opened it up to have a look to make sure that none of the power cables inside are loose?

Yes it could have jammed but it doesn't feal like it. Yes my case is always open for cooling (its the side beside the wall so nothing gets in there or damaged).

Nope theres no harddisks or fans noises like I usualy hear. its just DEAD. the only noise it the usual little hiss when the power is turned on or off.

I think the numlock light thingy is very strange thow...

open side for cooling? my brother did that the other day and the modem fell into it, causing the computer not to start up. i re-seated the graphics card and the memory and it worked again. difference being that it still booted but there was no picture.

check the motherboard connection to the power button too.
my advice would be to check all connections (power and data), reseat (take out then put back in) the graphics card and memory. maybe try unplugging the cd-roms and hard disks to see if that is the problem?

if that doesn't work, then it could be a busted powersupply or motherboard.

Iv reset everything now and still wont start. All conections are pluged in correctly and properly.

I press the button to start and I hear for a split second a little his noise so theres some effect. its that same noise like any normal startup but its only like a quater of a second of the startup prosess :(

If the mobo is stuffed then well.. how do I tell? Im think the warrenty is expired now too :givein: I think im cursed.

Looks like no deepfreze flight this weekend :(

A hissing noise you say??? hmmmm maybe you could be suffering from something like this:

seriously tho, if you are not getting any Fan or HDD or CD-ROM movement, you will probably find that either the PSU or the Mobo is stuffed.

I would unplug any FDD, HDD or CD-ROM and re-seat the RAM and Video Card. Then try again.

If this still yeilds no results, you may want to re-seat the CPU + Heatsink/Fan, but you will then need to redo the thermal paste between the two. Failure to do so, could have a "negative impact" on (read: fry) your CPU.

If this works, try adding the FDD, HDD and CD-ROM back one at a time to see if any of those were causing issues.

If its still working... yay for you...

If its not, then see if you can borrow a friends PSU for 5 minutes to see if thats the problem... after that, then you really need to get a tech to take a look... so they can try replacing bits individually to find exactly which bit is stuffed.

good luck

Thanks for that pawn :)

I'm not overly thrilled with the idea of messing with the cpu
I just gave in and took it to the shop since, after checking my warrenty I still have FIVE days left :D So hopefully its a hardware issue and not involving one of the many things iv added into my pc since purchase!

I'll keep you posted.

James

P.S: the picture is...interesting..... hehehe

Don't mess with it james if you still have 5 days left on the warrenty let them do it for you.thats what the warrenty is for get your moneys worth from them.To me it sounds like the power supply has died on you.get them to put a bigger one in for you.

Well I got a call this morning nd my dad took my into the shop during lunch. It was the power supply. So they have replaced it with a new one (duh)

I was told they noticed the gfx card getting very hot but I had had to unplug its fan cos it wasn
t working, I have a PCI fan there now so that should do for now...

I am not very imrpressed thow: I can now hear a very very anoying high pitched crackle squell sound that fads in and out constatly. itll send me MAD!

And iv tried turning it on and off a few times and one time I couldn't get it to stArt cos everytime I hit the start button my power surge protector thingy (I have a multibox with one on it) keeps jumping and turning off the power! So I left it and came back and it worked. CONFUSED lol

So only two real problems now

Thanks
James

Agreed with alex take it back to the shop as sounds like the g/card again to me ,i come to this by ,sound when changing windows ,sounds like the card is working overtime just to do this ,or how close is the new fan to the card ,is it rubbing on something ,how did it mount next to it etc... just a thought but did they take the old fan off the card ,as the new fan could blow the old fan around maybe even the wrong way ,and that is making the noise ,,take it back to the shop now before the weekend ...this is there problem not yours as such...

HI mike, not quite sure what you mean there but what I have done in terms of the g card and pci fan is:

*the gfx card fan was seizing up
*so I unpluged the fan on the card, the fan is still on the card
*I put a PCI fan in the slot beside the card and its not touching

I only noticed the noise after they put the new PSU in so I don't think its the cards old fan spining.

yes I was thinking thenoise when I do a task on the pc it could be making something work harder therefore putting more strain on the PSU. hmmm I'm going to have about $200 at the end of the year so will get new card then.

Could my current 5600 be do more bad than good to my system?

I got my mum to take my computer back to the shop today, I wrote down on a bti of paper all my questions and concerns. hopefully they wil sort it out without saying "we can't hear a noise, that will be thirty dollar please" <_<

They left a message on the phone saying its ready to pick up again, hope they fixd it

I hope its not the gfx card cauing trouble cos I put that in after I brought the pc, so its not in the warrenty and they wont like it if they relize I put it in and getting them to cover stuff cos of its caused hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Thanks
James

Hi Jimmy,

Are you still using my old 5600 that I sent you? I had no issues with the fan (or the card for that matter before I took it out of my PC). The fan used to be nice and quite in fact, and never got too hot.

Perhaps there is not enough power going to it? How big is your power supply, and are there any external cables running to the P.S. from the card. I can't remember is this was or not for me.

It looks like I am in the same boat as you- my PC won't start up either. It is the worst feeling isn't it- everyone else here is playing fsim and you are not  lol argh!

Hope you get things sorted mate, I have a spare PCI fan I could send you if you need it. Natas gave it to me, but I have never used it.

Even for opening firefox I hear the hiss

O well Looks like Ill just have to buy a new PSU every week  My warrenty is almost out, the said theyll replace it if it gos in a week..

Thats a very grunty power supply there james and if you are still hearing noises then I would be suspecting other things.Process of elimination time.If you can beg or borrow another graphics card then start there and swap it.if things are still the same then you know it is something else.unles you are using them,I would disconnect the cd/dvd drives, both the ata cable and the power cable from them.

I had a simalar problem a while back,it was actually the floppy drive power cable in my case.replaced the drive and all was sweet.I hope its not your mobo on the way out.

I may just disconct the floopy then? I never use it anymore as I always end up with disks becomeing corupted and needing formating witch when I try and format never works  Ill just disconect it....

Do more than that James.disconnecting the floppy is ok if you're not using it and it can be left disconnected. But also do the elimination check. It takes time but it may just pinpoint the area of trouble.Pity that you are not in Waihi I could look at it for you,and for free.I build computer systems up for people but not the high end stuff because mostly my customers don't require high end machines,so I do have a little expertise in that area.
