Icebergs approaching NZ



A rare sight has been spotted south of New Zealand.

Around 100 icebergs, concentrated in two groups, have been located south of Invercargill.

One group was no more than 261 kilometres south of the city.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion aircraft crew made the find on a routine fisheries patrol in the Southern Ocean.

The largest is estimated to have covered an area 2km by 1.5km, and is over 130 metres high.

Squadron Leader Andy Nielsen says while it is not unusual to see icebergs in the Southern Ocean he is surprised by the number of them and how far north they are.

"As we were operating in a major shipping lane and, due to the number of these things floating around, we thought it wise that Maritime New Zealand be informed", he said.

Although many of the ice-bergs are expected to melt the further north they travel, it is thought that the largest could be visible from Stewart Island given the right weather and tidal conditions over the coming days.

I saw on TV that some travel company has chartered aircraft to take passengers for a 'once in a lifetime' flight over the 'bergs. Anyone know what airline/plane this is... and if icebergs can be recreated in fs2004?

yes they can be there are genric icebergs in the fs9 library that can be placed or if you really wanted to go for it you could make them up as AI then program with traffic tool to move bloody slowly across the water !!! first one is ezy and the second way is harder and would need knowlege of model making and AI also traffic tools

Now imagine one of them rolling up on the beach when your trying o so had to pretend its a nice hot day for swimmimg

Someone else has pointed out that if global warming is true, then why haven't they melted?

i think then have from the size they would of been falling of the glazier the waters are warm up this way but unsure whats happening down there but it could be because there is acouple of them keeping the drink cool ,like putting ice in your whiskey its gonna stay cold for a bit then add 2 miles of ice well ???

That was on the initial scounting mission I believe.

I think perhaps an Invercargill based airline will be doing the flights...

I don't think we would need them moving, but to be able to fly over them at all would be real neat! Do you know of any other location in the fs2004 default world that has 'bergs?
