A teenage pilot had a lucky escape when the light plane he was flying crashed on landing at Invercargill Airport today.

The plane, thought to be a Piper Cherokee, crashed into a ditch shortly after midday.

Invercargill airport operations manager Eric Forsyth said the light aircraft, operated by the training organisation Southland Aero Club, was on approach to the runway before it crashed.
