Real NZ Wellington: Beehive "fix"

Howdy,

For those who think Wellington is just not Wellington without its iconic Beehive building, the following is a quick and dirty "fix".

Download Heath Well's "Wellington, NZ Photoreal Scenery Autogen and Buildings Add-On" (wtgnagn.zip, 02.08.2005, 2059kb) from AvSim.com.

Unzip and extract the two beehive .bgl files (nzwn_beehive_lib.BGL and nzwn_beehive_place.BGL) and the two texture files (nzwn_beehive.bmp and nzwn_beehive_lm.bmp).

Place the two .bgl files in your Add-On Scenery/Scenery folder and the two .bmps in Add-On Scenery/Texture folder.

Restart FS, let the database rebuild itself, and go flying in the full knowledge that the Beehive is now present and accounted for (okay, it's a few meters out, but at least it's there. :D )

Dorian

Didn't Robin decide not to include Heaths Beehive because it was not to scale with the rest of the buildings?

Also I expect the autogen will conflict with the new accuratly places stuff, so natas, I still suggets you build us a new one if you have time! ;)

The only objects which I didn't make from scratch are the default library objects. I don't have any problem with anyone using Heath's Beehive, or any other bits and pieces.
As I said earlier, Wellington is open to additions. Some FS sceneries develop an ad hoc scenery design team, who add whatever interests them. This can be other folk's freeware library objects (as in EZ Scenery, or the other one whose name escapes me...) or their own models. They might be just the local pier, or something grander, as Ron Watson did for Auckland, with Manukau City, or Heath's additions to the freeware Wellington.

Speaking of landmarks, anyone know the co-ords for Peter Jacksons Weta Studios? I'd like to see the photoreal image of the roof, apparently it's quite a big building.

Ah! Yes, the scale. This can simply be fixed by the doing following (this has NOT been approved by Heath whom I have yet to contact with regard to this quick and dirty "fix").

Create a .txt file called: nzwn_beehive_place and cut and paste the following text:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<FSData version="9.0"
xmlns:xsi='http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance'
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="bglcomp.xsd">

<SceneryObject
lat="S41 16.70210"
lon="E174 46.60630"
alt="0.0000M"
altitudeIsAgl="TRUE"
pitch="0.00"
bank="0.00"
heading="0.00"
imageComplexity="SPARSE">
<LibraryObject
name="8be267064294d494aa26ffb4f2160a18"
scale="0.77"/>
</SceneryObject>

</FSData>

xxx---xxx---xxx

Now, save the .txt file.

Run it through bglcomp.exe (available in the FS2004 SDK package: BGLComp_SDK) and voila! Replace the original nzwn_beehive_place.bgl with the new version.

The Beehive is now the correct height (72m or 235.8 feet). Heath had set the original scale as 0.40; by upping it to 0.77, the building assumes the correct proportions (within a foot or so).

Also I expect the autogen will conflict with the new accuratly places stuff

Nope. The Beehive slots very nicely into the existing autogen.

Not quite, the beehive is surrounded by about 8 buildings which are bigger, and none of them made it into the scenery either -- the Sky Tower is TALL. It stands out when you fly around. The beehive doesn't.
